Freedom- Friday Fictioneers

Photo Prompt by Dale Rogerson

Our last walk through these halls, then we will be released.

Nobody says a word, we are quiet. This is the moment we have been waiting for.

Freedom!

We didn’t think that day would ever come; we were not sure if we would make it.

They had shown no mercy, we were forced to stay here for years –like so many before us.

Over the years we have grown, we have learned our lessons.

Today is the day.

The last day of school.

Our graduation –what a wonderful triumph.

We are ready to step outside and conquer the world.

(Word count: 100)

The Friday Fictioneers are held by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. Now it’s official, I am addicted to the 100-word challenge. Every week I wonder if I will be able to tell a story with just 100 words and then I surprise myself just doing that again and again. Today I couldn’t help but think about the last day in boarding school. Thank you! I enjoyed it and I hope you will too.

This made me laugh, especially as you saw school in the prompt, as I did.

  2. Oh, I like where you took this! I thought Sci-Fi? Prison? Stranded? Then . . . . Students on the last day of school. Well done.

That last day of school is so exhilarating – I remember it well! The feeling that the whole world and a fresh new life awaits us.

I am still wondering whether they’re regular students?

That took me back. That was exactly it – the feeling you’d conquer the world. And then came the reality check… 🙂

  6. I really like this. Yeah, the real world awaits…implacable bosses…jealous, backstabbing coworkers… As grandpa used to say, these kids don’t know how good they’ve had it.

Ha, I read it again after I realised it wasn’t some sort of prison. Or maybe school is, of a sort… 🙂

  8. Dear Bridget,

At first I thought they were some kind of penal colony (although they might have felt like it at times 😉 ) until you turned the story on its ear. I see in your reply to Neil that it’s based on your own experience. Nice…and well rendered.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    • I remember that day so well. There were so many mixed feelings and emotions. The urge to be “free” as a young adult, the fear of being an adult. It was interesting. Thank you for your comment.

Great twist. I remember having mixed feelings about finishing school, obviously I had a better time than these pupils!

  10. I can feel Pink Floyd in my head… “We don’t need no education….”

Alas the freedom outside was always worse.

That was a fun take (little inversion of letters… methinks you wanted quiet and not quite!)

I’m betting they’re worker bees, not people

    • No, they were people, little people. I went to a boarding school in Europe for 12 years. I remember the last day very well. I couldn’t wait to leave and now, years later, it’s a memory I am very fond of.
