Let him Think

I don’t know if other couples have the same issue. But if I really want something to happen, it’s often the best for me to make my husband think it was his idea all along.  The following is a typical example.

“Honey, the museum called,” I joked.

“The museum?”

“Yes, they want your phone.”

“Haha, very funny.”

“I just saw a phone that would be perfect for you.”

“I don’t need a new phone.”

“Yes, you do, the museum thinks so too.”

“I don’t want to spend all that money for a fancy phone.”

“Me neither. I found one on eBay. It’s an older model, but mint and think it would be perfect for you.”

“My phone works fine?”

(Sigh)

I didn’t press the issue any further, he needs his thinking breaks. We both receive lots of work-related pictures and text messages we can hardly see or read. Perhaps there is an age limit for small screens? And if so, we are way over it.

In the evening I showed him the phone I had in mind, and we both watched a short movie that compared the phone to others. The screen was double the size, and while it had many features that he will never use, it was perfect. I made a last minute bid and won the phone.

My husband has now spent two days with his new toy, and he loves it. He even read the instructions -what surprised me.

Last night when we watched TV, he answered a text, looked at me and said, “You know, I am glad WE decided to get new phones.”

“I know honey, I know.”

“Yes, I couldn’t have made a better choice.”

(Sigh)

I didn’t say much, but today in the morning I went shopping. My new phone should be here on Thursday. It is the same as his, just the bamboo edition. Now we are all set for the next eight years. 🙂

That tactic works equally well on bosses at work – male or female 😉

I have the same challenge, Bridget. I need to discreetly get Gilles to think something is his idea. Why can’t they simply acknowledge that we know better. It would be faster and easier 🙂

Congrats on the new phones though! Well played.

My parents were the reverse of you two and my dad called this ‘not invented here, syndrome’ … this is where the recipient has to think they came up with the idea otherwise they trash it so the perpetrator has to be savvy like you are … enjoy the new phones – the bamboo is luscious!

        • And it’s affordable. It’s a 2015 Motorola x pure edition. I paid $145 for an almost mint phone with warranty.

Wow! I am genuinely and truly impressed (and not a little guilty for the money my mum spent on a new phone for me last Christmas when my French one was bringing grief to entire nations let alone just my family)

  7. LOL As my grandmother used to say, a man is the head of his house, but a woman is the neck; wherever the neck turns, the head looks.
