“The Walking Dead” did not return

The Walking Dead returned for the second half of season eight, and we did not tune in. Instead, we decided to break up with the show, and we both felt relieved when we finally said it out loud.

The last two seasons had been too painful to watch. The once fast and action-packed show had slowed down to an almost dull level. We were holding on for years, hoped that the writers and producers would turn the aging show around, but they didn’t. Instead, they continued to torture us with one boring episode after the next.

Last night they killed off Carl I just read, and I bet it took at list one whole episode to do so. At this point it doesn’t matter who will leave the show anymore, the viewers have long lost touch with the once so beloved characters.

That always puzzled me the most. Carol, Daryl, Rick, Michone and our forever pregnant Maggie; the ones who made us fall in love with this show at the beginning, were pushed aside. Instead, we were introduced to new characters, and the utterly unrealistic bat-swinging Negan.

But he was not the problem, even though they gave him too much space. Who could forget the endless long season seven opener, with the brutal killing of Abraham and Glenn?

The slow death of The Walking Dead started -for us- in season five. Back then in Alexandria, they began to drag scenes along. A 10-minute scene was stretched into a full 45-minute episode. Special effects became more important than the content; logic and reasoning was left behind along with our beloved characters.

Why did we hold on so long? It was once so good, we always hoped, and then they killed our hope.

My verdict: Written to death!

Solution: Step away from the comic book, get a  new writing team and go back to basic!

  1. Us too. We’ve just given up now. I want to be able to go back and watch the rest of it possibly at some point in the future, but not now. I don’t want it to get tainted like ‘Lost’ did….
It’s a shame that something that meant so much to me could now mean so little.

  2. Difficult decision to give up on something you once thought great, and really enjoyed. We always hope it will get better, back to the good old days. Trouble is, we move on too, and maybe the good old days weren’t as good as we remember!

Like the other blogger who commented here, I’ve never seen it. Never will. I have family that are (were?) besotted, but one gory scene was enough to tell me that I didn’t need to watch it. Ever. Dodged a bullet it sounds like too. I’m dating myself here, but in the ‘good old days’ of Gunsmoke and the like, somehow they kept things fresh episode to episode and they didn’t tease a person by making four episodes and then going on hiatus for six months, only to come back and make maybe two or three more. True in the Gunsmoke version of things, there were good guys and bad guys each episode, and usually one of the main characters got shot or involved in the crime or kidnapped, but somehow the writers kept us coming back for more. Maybe the writers of today just don’t have what it takes? What am I saying? No. They don’t.

    • I suppose it was easier back then. We were able to identify the good and the bad guys fairly easy, today it’s not that simple anymore -on and off screen.

I never watched Gunsmoke, I am “only” 54. I grew up with Bonanza. 🙂

You were the one who suggested The Walking Dead to me a while back. We tried it – the entire first season. Even then, we could already see that this interesting concept was going to devolve into the typical serial TV show that repeats itself over and over – in this case, running away from zombies and internal conflict. Maybe I’m just cynical about the ability of TV to consistently generate new and interesting content.

    • I don’t want to spend too much time in front of the TV, so we get more selective and bored easier.

We haven’t really found a good show lately -beside the first season of Ozark. Perhaps we are spoiled now (we cannot be cynical.)

We haven’t landed on anything new either. We’ll watch a few episodes of something and then Gilles will get bored with it. I’m easier to please 😉

        • The last TV series that we both enjoyed was (or is) “The Americans.”

I never watched this, since it seemed so much like a bad time–I wouldn’t want to get attached to characters in such a doomed-seeming situation.

    • It was a great show at the beginning. It was never about the zombies it was about the characters. How humans come together to overcome hard times.

That sounds more worthwhile. Too bad it got worse, according to the viewers I have read or known.

  6. We broke up with the show in October. It’s just not the same anymore.
