Spring Cleaning BS

Right about now, when the sun shines a little bit brighter, that’s when I start to see dirt everywhere. I have the spring cleaning disease! Apparently, it runs in our family, my Grandmother gave it to me.

By the end of March, the beginning of April you could see her cleaning our farmhouse top to bottom. Nobody was spared -not even the old farm dog.

Carpets and rugs were dragged outside, and our featherbeds could be seen hanging over the window seal. Everything needed to be AIRED OUT after the long winter months, and I think that included me, because she kept me busy running back and forth at lightning speed.

I had a long list of chores that seemed to be such a waste of time, but I didn’t dare to open my mouth. Depending on the weather, the first tourists and hikers would come by soon and rent a bedroom or two -by then the house needed to be spotless.

I tried running away, tried to hide at a neighbor farm, but there was no escape. It was the same everywhere. Everybody was busy like a bee, and the little ones had lists with chores longer than their arm there too, so I went back home.

I almost felt relieved when I was back in boarding school, but there was no way out -the nuns had been infected too.

Everywhere you look people get busy in springtime and I am no exception.

I am merciless decluttering our cabinets and shelves. If something is not seasonal, it goes into a donation bag, if we haven’t used in two years. My husband, who would be a hoarder-in-the-making, hates this time of the year. He is often on a rescue mission and can be seen snooping through bags with old clothes. He hangs onto things, even though they don’t fit anymore.

Bags and boxes are sitting in my workroom and are guarded by the dogs. Let’s hope the donation truck comes before my husband finds a way to go through everything.

It’s funny how some of us can declutter in a wink and others go er-um for weeks, and then still can’t get rid. I’m getting better at it but my son was home to go through his old stuff one weekend (we’re selling up for the move to the Algarve 🙂 ) and he departed with a box furtively tucked under his arm and a 27 year old Bear. I’m sitting surrounded by 40 years worth of photos, getting nowhere fast. I’m cleaning for light relief 🙂 🙂

  2. Oh dear, I keep clothes (and book and papers) a very long time. I might not wear something for ten years, then revive it and wear it for another five. I do buy nearly all my clothes from charity, or I make them myself, and I recycle lots of them too. I try to make myself put clothes I don’t like very much in the charity bag, but if they are useful in some way I find it difficult.

    • You are so lovable, you know that right?

I am merciless and throw things out, I think my husband (the hoarder) made me become a minimalist. Opposites attract I suppose.

I’ve got a healthy dose of spring cleaning mania going on now too. It was triggered by Misha moving back to Toronto to start a new job. To clean out one closet in the spare room, I ended up tackling 4 closets. You know what happens once you start … now I feel like I’m on a mission!
Good luck for your cleaning! Before long we will be outside tackling the yard work.

It’s not going to happen anytime soon in these parts. We’ve just had a major ice storm this weekend and to say it’s a mess outside would be an understatement!!
At least we have power again 🙂

Your mantra is similar to mine. I remember my mother used to talk about spring cleaning, it was never something to look forward to especially when I would be given the job of cleaning the Venetian blinds…ugh..

  5. Like the clutter clearing mantra, the list looks too much like hard work! But I do love a good clear out too. Having done that a year ago, we’re trying to stay light, it does make cleaning less of a chore and less time-consuming.

I’m such a terrible pack-rat but everyone once in a while I have to put my foot done and do a good purge and get rid of or give away anything I don’t use or wear anymore.
    I love that checklist.

    • I love the checklist as well. It’s pretty detailed and it does include the outside as well. I am glad you can get rid of things.

It’s such a chore but I love that “lighter” feeling when the old stuff has been carted away and the closets have room once again!

Husbands are the Worst at hoarding, lol! That made me laugh because it’s exactly what I say when I spring clean/purge! Happy cleaning!
