Best Friends Forever

Sometimes, out of the blue, I start to smile
when a memory of us comes to my mind.
My eyes start shining, my body relaxes
and within a few seconds life is beautiful.

I can see us laugh so hard, we had to cry,
the tears we dried, the joy we shared.
Two women so different, jet so much alike
two peas in a pod, understanding without words.

Canning vegetables and jams to midnight
creating new cocktails just because we felt like it.
Girl’s night out was a given, desserts were shared
presents given, cakes baked, life celebrated.

A call in the night, rushing over in my Pjs
watching puppies being born in your bed.
Burring friends and family through the years,
celebrating childbirth, marriages, even divorce.

We always thought it would stay like this
not worried at all, we were too young to die.
We even joked about sitting on a porch in old age
in a far away future that will never be lived by you.

One day you were gone too soon, and I miss you.
Six years have passed and not a day goes by
I don’t think of you and smile or sigh.
Best friends, missing you forever.
