The Golden Voice from Czechoslovakia. A beautiful country, once a part of Austria and Hungary and since 1992 separated into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Karel Gott sang in German and many older women were smitten with him, and my grandmother was not exception, she had all of his records. At the age of thirteen, I would have never admitted to my friends that I liked him too.
His song about traveling the world was one of my favorites. After all, that was my goal, I just had to figure out how to make it happen. Deep down I knew one day I would see where Mowgli from The Dschungle Book had lived and perhaps I even would make it to Africa and see all the animals from my wall tapestry in real.
The dreams of a young girl. I would marry a rich man or become famous somehow, but I never doubted that I would see the world.
I did make it happen without fame and fortune but as a translator and interpreter. I took on jobs and projects others didn’t want, either because they had to drop everything and fly out right away, or they didn’t want to leave their families alone for too long.
I dropped everything in a heartbeat and flew out for as long as it took. 🙂

Once Around the World
To travel all around the world with my pockets full of money
So I won’t miss out on any love and happiness
To see many foreign countries, to walk on the moon
That’s what I’ve been dreaming about ever since I was a little boy
If only you knew as a child
What to do and what not to
Life would be easy
[If you only knew] whether you’d reach any faraway goal
And experience the most beautiful of all feelings
Eventually
Of all the many illusions
That are living in our hearts
Only a few will remain
And miraculously
They may come true eventually
To travel all around the world with my pockets full of money
So I won’t miss out on any love and happiness
To see many foreign countries, to walk on the moon
That’s what I’ve been dreaming about ever since I was a little boy
To travel all around the world with my pockets full of money
So I won’t miss out on any love and happiness
To see many foreign countries, to walk on the moon
That’s what I’ve been dreaming about ever since I was a little boy
I haven’t made it to the moon, but who knows, maybe one day I will. Perhaps not in this lifetime but maybe in the next or in between, or just in my dreams at night, when I see it shining.

What a wonderful addition to what we know of your youth and then hear more about how your youthful intentions brought you to where you are today. Karel has a lovely voice and I can see why your grandmother felt a connection. I have memories of liking some of my parents music and that same thought that maybe I shouldn’t admit it to my friends. It amuses me today to think of that. 😃
It amuses me as well. How insecure we are when we are young. I am glad it changed over time.
Wonderful. I look forward to meeting up with you on the moon!
Being a translator and interpreter is an attractive skill
Yes, I agree. A series of posts about your experiences as an interpreter would be captivating. My husband’s parents were from Slovakia, but he’s not familiar with this singer. 🙂
Thank you, Nancy. I might do that. I have so many wonderful memories, why not share.
I wouldn’t trade my world travels for anything! But to be a translator/interpreter…WOW what an experience. You must have loads of stories from your travels. If you ever write a memoire of your journeys, I will buy it!
I was thinking about writing post about my travels and about the people I met. So many of them have made a difference in my life, they have forced me to rethink some of the rules I lived by, they have widened my horizon, they have put my believes upside down. 🙂
I would DEFINITELY read that!
