…
This is the animal that never was.
Not knowing that they loved it anyway;
its bearing, its stride, its high, clear whinny,
right down to the still light of its gaze.
It never was. And yet such was their love
the beast arose, where they had cleared the space;
and in the stable of its nothingness,
it shook its white mane out and stamped its hoof.
And so they fed it, not with hay or corn
but with the chance that it might come to pass.
All this gave the creature such a power
its brow put out a horn; one single horn.
It grew inside a young girl’s looking glass,
then one day walked out and passed into her.
Rainer Maria Rilke: Sonnets to Orpheus II:4
I am human and comparing myself to an animal would offend all these wonderful creatures.
We humans think we are smarter yet we act so mindless and are clearly the worst beast. We are the monster you can’t imagine because no thought can be as cruel as human reality is.
I wish to be a unicorn.
Seen only by the ones with a kind heart, understood by a few, and misunderstood by most. Unique like a unicorn, living in an enchanted forest far away from war and violence that sounds wonderful.
A replica of the tapestry below hangs in our living room. It has a story. We bought it when we couldn’t afford it, but we needed it to set the tone for the new chapters in our lives. Twelve years later it still hangs on our wall as a reminder of who we are, and what we are made of. Long story 🙂

Lovely backdrop for life in your living room. I’ve seen the original at The Cloisters and read the William Carlos William poem (Paterson) it symbolically punctuates. Also lovely 🙂
I always wanted to see the original but as you said, the replica is not too shabby. 🙂
I almost answered this question but just couldn’t decide on a single animal… I would want different attributes of different ones. You certainly have the strength and confidence of a unicorn! I love the tapestry print too!
Engaging post, Bridget, and beautiful art that must bring an imaginative and hopeful vibe into your space. 🦄
Thank you, Michele.
Thank you!
You and almost every other little girl I know
Did you just belittle me? 🙂 🙂 🙂
🙂
“no thought can be as cruel as human reality is”
So very sad, but true
I love it! I was thinking as I studied the photo of the tapestry… “I need that in my house as wallpaper!” lol
I think you would be a great unicorn, btw.
I like the thought about being a good unicorn. 🙂 The word ‘great’ has such a negative sound lately
A wise and noble choice I believe. We humans seen to get more stupid by the day!
Sadly, you are right as so often. The smarter our technologies seem to be, the more we dumb down.
Well said. A unicorn is the perfect animal to strive to be like. Humans are said to be the most intelligent animals, but I think the jury is still out on that one. Perhaps we are most like the duck, undiscernible on the surface, paddling like mad below and realizing most humans are not all they are quacked up to be. Happy Monday. Allan
We really have the tapestry of the unicorn in captivity in our living room. Not the original, but a darn good replica :-).
I like how you compare us to the ducks. Lot’s of quacking going on, that’s for sure. 🙂
It’s beautiful, and I know you have a beautiful soul, Bridget. I think I’m more like the rubber duckie!
LOL thanks for the laugh.
