And Just Like That It’s Spring

Almost overnight, the trees are no longer bare but are budding. Flowers are poking through the soil. Nature has awakened, and soon all will be in full bloom.

I am ready, and just like every year, I have spring fever. I look at our yard, and I can’t help but wish for more of everything. A few more plants, a little bit more soil, more grass on the bare spots, perhaps more twinkling solar lights on our gazebo. More green, more bloom, more color, more sunshine. I am ready! Bring it on!

The crooked little tree in our yard is full of pink blossoms. Maybe tomorrow they will all be open, and the tree will show off its beauty until the first April winds blow its flower petals all over our yard.

It’s the season of new growth and cleanup.

The seedlings on the window shelf in our dining room are ready to be planted. For the first time, we will have a black Russian tomato in one of our planter bags. I bought ten of them for tomatoes and peppers, and I can’t wait to fill them all. What a genius invention it is, or what a flop. We shall see!

Our herb tray has become a mystery project. I didn’t pay too much attention and forgot to use a waterproof marker when I wrote on the plant sticks. The first shower in the sink washed my writing away. Live and learn, I suppose.

Only time will tell how much thyme we will have. It looks like all seeds made it, and we will have fresh chives, basil, parsley, dill, sage, and a few other herbs that I don’t remember. Cooking with fresh herbs makes such a difference.

Our small planter boxes look weathered now, but it doesn’t matter. They were a science project anyway. An Aldi bargain, we got four for $40 on clearance last year—way under price. They are not supposed to be beautiful; they are supposed to keep our plants safe from rats, mice, and other critters.

This year, I will be planting radishes, beets, carrots, green onions, eggplants, and kohlrabi. Spinach and lettuce will have to wait for a while. Tomatoes and pepper varieties will go into the bags.

I can wait to get my hands in the soil. I have four new rosebushes for our flowerbeds. Two small azaleas will have to live in flowerpots for a while. I will place them right in the middle of the dog’s walkway through our large flowerbed. It’s a last re-route attempt. If this won’t work, we, the humans, will cave, and we will buy some stepping stones, and the dogs will have a dog path in the middle of our flowers, because that’s what dog owners do. We let them train us!

Every year, when spring arrives, I look at our yard, and I wonder if this mess will ever look pretty again. Mowing, mulching, cutting and pruning, leaf blowing, there is so much to do. It seems overwhelming at first.

The yard is a mess – Winter is gone – It’s clean-up time.

Those seedlings look like mine when I first began growing from seeds 4 years ago – so leggy. They need potting up. Good luck with your garden. I used to use grow bags but they dry out way too fast here, especially during the summer when relative humidity is less than 20%. Maybe I’ll try again this year.

Do it bit by bit > a small change every day and you will be delighted by the evolving status quo. Since I live in a studio with an outside patio at the moment, have bought a couple of rectangular planters on legs and am having huge fun with all the herbs you are . . . well, thyme and both mints have pushed most others out of the way 🙂 !

    • My herb planter will be a surprise party this year, which might be entertaining. I am glad you have an outside patio.

  3. We’ve had several really good warm days, so I’ve managed to do a lot of tidying up, cutting back and replanting. I’ve avoided the temptation to buy too many new plants, as the garden is really quite full now.

    • I had taken on a big work project and just finished it. Now I have a few days for yard work. We had a very cold and icy winter, some of our older plants didn’t make it, which I suppose is normal. I gave in to the temptation this year..sigh.

Yay for Spring! We only have a small patio but Mick is busy right now, replenishing some of the pots that look a bit tired. I know I should but we don’t grow veg or herbs xx
