9/11 Rescue Dogs…remembered~!

If you ever worked with rescue dogs, then you will know that they are doing hard work. Searching for survivors after disasters like 9/11, that’s what they are trained for. Their goal is to find as many as possible, it’s a race against time. Then, when they can’t find any more survivors, that’s when they continue to search for the remains of victims. It’s hard on them and on their handlers and owners, you can see it in their eyes.

Around 900 rescue dogs were deployed to New York City on September 11, 2001; they worked with search and rescue teams around the clock, day and night, while they were trying to locate trapped people underneath the rubble of the World Trade Center. Today only one is still alive~!

So this year in remembrance of a good friend, I would like to pay a different tribute. A tribute to the 4-legged helpers at 9/11.

I had no idea they used so many rescue dogs in the rescue attempt on 9/11. These pictures are so poignant. Thank you, Bridget for posting this.

Only one is still alive… Did they suffer from the same kinds of diseases afterward like the police officers and firefighters did? Or did they just pass from old age? That’s a lot of dogs…

    • Some of them died of cancer, some got very old. There are some statistics, but many were from different towns, states and every countries…so it’s a tough one. Dogs normal life expectancy for bigger dogs is between 10-15, so considering that it happened 14 years ago, it’s normal that almost all are gone by now.

I did that, but it wouldn’t let me reblog it a second time. So I pulled it out of the trash and put it up anyway. People had to click on the little slide show thingy to see what I had originally put up to introduce the post. Don’t know what that word Gallery above it means, but am wondering if it had something to do with that.
