Victory- Friday Fictioneers

Friday Fictioneers

The whole city seems to be on its feet; they are celebrating their victory. People are dancing in the street, I can hear music and laughter. The party will continue until early in the morning. I know, I have witnessed it before.

And here I am, sitting in the dark, as I watch the firework from my room. I don’t feel like celebrating, my heart is heavy. I am not from here; I am not one of them.

They won the title, my team lost. I shut the door, close the curtains and suffer in silence.

“Stupid sport,” I mumble.

This is my entry to this week’s Friday Fictioneers 100-word challenge. I couldn’t help it; Football season will start this weekend and for the next months I will watch my husband suffer with his team every Sunday. The whole concept is lost on me, but it doesn’t look appealing (at all).

Today I borrowed Rochelle’s welcome picture, because she explains the challenge so much better than I ever could. (I hope using the picture was alright.)

Click >>>here<<< and check out the other entries and Rochelle’s blog. It is so much fun.

  1. Glad it’s a game, and nothing worse! No real harm done, right? Nicely told tale, and that ending is so apt!

(Sorry about my late response to your story! My computer is kaput; I’m using my husband’s computer!)

  3. This is a wonderful twist from a war to a game (though it’s for some the same)… I’m so glad I’m spared to care

    • “Spared to care,”…genius statement. I might have to borrow it in the future.

  4. Greetings!
LOL, I love the twist at the end! It’s SO true of die hard sports fans, too. (I should know, we’re a pretty hard-core Red Sox household.) You have some great, tight phrasing that keeps a nice pace for reading and some other, longer sentences that might be snappier if you spliced a few others. That being said, you capture the emotion of a deeply-invested fan of the losing team brilliantly!
    Happy trails! 🙂

I feel like I’m in good company. It’s all lost on me too.
… but here it’s hockey rather than football. Different sport but same blank stare from me.

  6. Not a sports fan myself but living here in Pittsburgh any time the Steelers play it seems the entire city goes nuts including my sons. Enjoyable piece! Have a nice weekend 😄

I suppose some people get so wrapped up in their sports. Personally, once it’s over, it’s over. But you captured that passion.

Ha, great misdirection. I thought about victory and war too. When the German soccer team plays in a large tournament, I get pretty fired up too. 😀

    • I was born and raised on the border between Austria and Italy. I too watch soccer and that’s the only time you will ever get any emotions from me -sports-wise. I watch Italy (of course) and Germany, so I know what you mean.

  9. Dear Bridget,

Some people take their sports so seriously. You’ve captured this well. Love it.

    Shalom,

I love the big build up and then it turns out it’s only a football game! I was thinking an invading army at the least 🙂

    • You would get along with my husband just fine, he suffers with his team..it’s pathetic to watch for someone -like me- who just doesn’t get it. 🙂

It’s just a game, for me it’s about taking part and playing to the best of ones ability.

I don’t feel as bad as your main character when my team loses but I can feel the distaste.

    I’m a bit that way watching Rafa (Nadal 🙂 ). It’s like a personal assault if he loses. Sad, aren’t I? 🙂

  17. Love it and I can so relate. Not only does my husband watch football, but he plays fantasy football. It’s a mystery.

    • I tried, I tried so hard. I sat there and followed the game but my mind wanders off after 10 minutes and there is nothing I can do about it.

      It is a mystery. 🙂
