Oprah for President

Oprah Winfrey gave a well-written acceptance speech at the Golden Globe, and the next day some people speculated she might run for President in 2020.

Are you fricking kidding me? There goes one of my New Years resolutions. What is wrong with this nation? She is a talk show host, an actress, a business woman. She is as much a politician as the current reality TV star, who occupies the White House right now.

Our obsession with celebrities is frightening.  HELP ME Stephen!

Goodness what is next?

I think the bar has been set so low today it’s scary to think of what’s to come. It feels like we’ve become a nation of mindless idiots who believe any and everything. Whatever happened to reasoning? Geez, just because a wealthy, influential person can give a powerful speech, this alone does not equate to them being able to handle the office of the presidency.

I think there are two issues here. The one is the global obsession with celebrity and the increasing tendency to believe that because someone has a great pull on TV (or in films) that they are somehow qualified for government. The second issue is that the present incumbent of the Oval Office is beyond scary and there is a seeming desperation to find an alternative. Oprah is really good at being Oprah and her speech was powerful and motivating – quite honesty, as I would expect …. it is HOW she has made her millions. But what it actually said to me was not Oprah 2020, what it spoke of to me was that we can if we will. That men, women, white or of colour CAN bring about change. To me it was a call to action not a coded message that she intends to run for office. Politics is not business, running a country is far more than profit margins. To be considered, a person should have a solid background that is relevant. I do not think that being a smart journalist, broadcaster and TV celebrity is that qualification. However, I do understand the collective desperation that is motivating the cry for Oprah 2020.

Hahaha! It’s all too bizarre for me to wrap my brain around! Why do we think Good Leadership only comes from politics. Oprah has been a transformational figure in our culture. I think she’s great. But president? Uh, No!

I just think that all of us should do our best, and that to me is the big lesson of the last year: whether or not there is a good presiedent, we EACH have to take part, do our best, and NOT see politics as a saviour religion with some parent figure at the head of it to ‘save’ us all–

Not so long ago (and sadly not so far away)…an actor became POTUS. He stayed in long enough to horrify some of us, who watched his decline into Alzheimer or dementia. So maybe that’s where it all began. The decline of western civilization. Jimmy Carter was no peach either, and that bozo before HIM…oh dear god. So to me a black woman with a big mouth who appears to be overly altruistic isn’t such a bad idea. If she has hidden ‘agendas?” Well so did all the men. Opinion respectfully offered. I mean is there ANYONE you can name who would be a good candidate, since we can’t get that Yam out of office (apparently)? The alternatives right now are awful..

    • Democrats should NEVER allow just anyone with some smarts and a ‘celebrity name’ to grab the Democrat’s banner and run for president. President is a serious job- it involves being very knowledgeable about the constitution, the laws of this country, foreign policy and diplomacy. Knowing the nuances and get things done in a fair and bipartisan way.

All these things have been thrown to the roadside with Trump’s grabbing the GOP’s banner and them allowing him to run with it.

The Democrats can’t do the same. It’s not a matter of only “getting the win” next time, it’s about putting a seasoned, educated, well rounded and experienced person into the Presidency. Celebrity status is not a qualification.

The big difference between the black woman and the orange man is that the former accepts that she doesn’t know everything she needs or wants to know about a given subject and then will go out and find the person(s) who does/do. The latter keeps trying to convince us that he knows all he needs to know and is not interested in learning anything he doesn’t know or even admitting that there are such things.

We have a history of electing TV personalities, probably because they are skilled in delivering their messages, whether they be about products or ideas. Much as we progressives didn’t like many of Reagan’s ideas, I think we can at least say about him that he called on others for advice, similar to Oprah.

It could be that the possession of these two qualities, ability to communicate and to seek out advice, are what’s required to become President at this moment. Hopefully, those who voted for the orange man have learned that possessing only the former does not yield desired results.

    • You are kidding right? She has absolutely no qualification and would be as bad as Trump because of that.

      • Ha, ha…on the contrary, I believe a strong, educated, successful Black woman is more than qualified to be the POTUS. At least, she won’t be doing all that tweeting and name-calling.

        • She is an actress and plays her part well. Successful business men and women think about profit only -just like Trump, just like Oprah. The country is not a business and can’t be run like one. Let’s agree to disagree.

          • But I do agree with you. Oprah is an actress and Ronald Reagan was an actor. So was Arnold Schwarzenegger and Al Franken was a comedian. Our government continues to be run by successful businessmen and businesswomen.

  6. 🙂 Yes a great speech, I shared it too.. But have to agree, too many people running our countries who have no experience what so ever is enough.

    • Right now I would even accept Mickey Mouse, instead of #45 but I fear for us as a nation if we don’t start to use our brain when we elect people.

      • It’s unreal. Hopefully, mid-term elections tie his hands, and then gets booted to the curb himself in 2020. I call fail on this pitiful experiment.
