The Grinch himself found out and so did we

…So he paused. And the Grinch put his hand to his ear.
And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low. Then it started to grow.
But the sound wasn’t sad! Why, this sound sounded merry!

It couldn’t be so! But it WAS merry! VERY!
He stared down at Whoville! The Grinch popped his eyes!
Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise!
Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any presents at all!
He HADN’T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so?”
“It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!”
“It came without packages, boxes or bags!”
And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before!
“Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store.”
“Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”…

While still trying to shake the guilt about not feeling Christmasy this year, we came to the realization that there are actually no rules on how to celebrate Christmas. This year was different in so many ways, it might as well be a different kind of Holiday Season as well.

So, with less spirit and time running out, we have decided to enjoy the Christmas Holidays differently this year, just the two of us. Our tree will stay in the attic, but some of our most treasured decorations will be placed on the TV trays we never use, positioned safely in the corner of the living room so that neither the two nor four-legged klutzes can bump against it.

Presents will be wrapped and placed around on the floor, and our newest second-hand find will be the star for one year. The rentiers will shine, surrounded by an led garland my husband bought instead of miniature ornaments, because the eyeglasses were not on his nose, but on his head.

There is no rule for Christmas, the Grinch himself had found out.
