Are Humans Stupid?

One could, without exaggeration, jokingly or seriously say that humans have conspired in their intelligence to extinguish the human race. Too sarcastic? Too exaggerated or even too conspiratorial? Perhaps not look at us! I don’t like to use the word stupid, yet, while writing this, it seems the perfect word choice.

We believe we, the human species, embody intelligence and brilliance, and that we are above all other (animal) species.

We are quite arrogant, considering that no animal consciously destroys the environment on which its survival depends on, invents machines that kill its own kind, or uses technology and a diet that all produce garbage. We, humans, spread diseases, manufacture weapons for mass killings, start wars, torture, and kill, and act without first thinking about the consequences.

.

.

How did it all start? With Adam and Eve or when the first monkey could walk upright? Was everything still okay back then, and we only became more and more stupid over time? Hard to tell, but what is certain is that today we seem “stuck” and are developing backward rather than forward. We don’t know how to use much of what is called innovations properly, one of the main reasons many catastrophes have happened on earth -ecological, economic, and also psychological.

Were we stupid from the beginning? I am not sure, but there is a lot of evidence for human madness, a lot of evidence of the shrinkage and mental regression of the human brain. What happens next? Accept stupidity and total destruction?

In most people, the love of evil, the pleasure of destruction, and the brutal and bitter, harsh approach against innocent and harmless living beings can be found to varying degrees. Human intelligence leads to something Germans call SCHADENFREUDE*, and a sadomasochistic conspiracy to eradicate humanity and life in this universe.

We just don’t make any sense. We act stupid!

As animals expand their abilities and evolve in the process, humans at the same time degrade their abilities and replace themselves with another alien/robot intelligence that, and that’s the worst scenario, could control them tomorrow. The proof of our un-intelligence lies in the fact that, despite all these facts, we continue to believe that we are becoming more and more intelligent.

How do we make people think for themselves? How do we motivate them and make them humble and grateful so that they can improve and make the world a little better, healthier, and happier?

Perhaps what hinders us from accepting our stupidity are pride and self-protection.

If we recognize our “madness” and we would deconstruct and destroy our myths, beliefs, orientations, values, and ideals, perhaps that would give us a healthy sense of fear and insecurity. I am not talking (writing) about the fear of almighty angry gods or an afterlife spent on the rotisserie grill over hell’s fire, but the fear of our own shortcomings.

When we would feel small and little, perhaps then we could raise to greatness.

In all areas of life, so far, humans only have taken steps backward, and the worst thing is that we are not even aware of it. We live with the illusion that we are the most intelligent, the strongest, and the smartest. However, we forget that this is only a self-hypothesis because the reality is shocking. Without a doubt, humans are the most destructive element on this planet.

We are destroyers and inventors of the doctrine of racism and the concept of race itself. We are murderers and animal killers, criminal and environmental terrorists, discoverers of weapons of mass destruction, rapists, inventors of a dietary style that brings death, inventors of a technology that leads to more disasters than solutions, story forgers, inventors of medicine, which often only cures symptoms, rather than the causes. We are destroying the planet we live on!

Does that sound intelligent?

Sometimes I wonder if there are other life forms out there and how I could warn them about us? “Don’t come here. People on this planet are stupid!

How our planet must look to them?

Let’s spin this tale further. How about the gods?

If the sons (and daughters) of all current prayed to gods would be sent to earth again to save and/or enlighten us, what would they find, and more importantly, how would we treat them? Would we welcome them and embrace their wisdom, or would the daughters of the gods end up in prison, be forced to have human babies, and end up in mental institutions afterward? Would we torture the sons of the gods in laboratories so we could study the brain and find out how the gods work?

Far stretched?

Perhaps my headline is wrong and I should remove the question mark and make it a statement.

Humans are stupid!

Without people, the world would be better off.

*) Schadenfreude is the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another. It is a borrowed word from German, with no direct translation,

Humans? We are superstitious and give power to imaginary things. If we believe a creator god exists and is in control of everything, why worry? The problem is we humans have not yet come to grips with our true place in the universe. We are not the reason for creation and to believe that heaven exists in any place other than in human imagination is a delusion. Cheers! GROG

I have wondered if humans have always been stupid or are getting “more stupid” by the day? Is it simply that all forms of social media and the ease in breadth of communication models is amplifying every inane and silly thought that people have? It wasn’t that long ago that I blamed poor education on why people had lost the ability to reason and make wise decisions. I’ve revised that thought over the last several years as I’ve realized people with excellent academic records can still just be stupid. LOL! Now you’ve got me thinking of particular people, Bridget! Ha!

    • I think we, as a society, have become very shallow and it’s a scary thing to watch. Many are headline oriented, they get their news delivered on their phone, and they feel they have to check out various social media pages a couple of times a day. It seems more important to take a picture of your Starbucks coffee or your dinner plate than to take a picture of your real surroundings. Even when we travel, we put ourselves now in the center, take pictures with the monuments and travel gems in the back -so they become background.

I’m afraid your post is spot on… There are currently so many crisis that reveal stupidity at so many levels, I can’t even look anymore. What is our goal? Stretching stupidity to it’s limits? If that, we’re doing alright. I just hoped we were better.

Your interesting post comes hot on the heels of two quotations I received within the past two days. The first is this one which my granddaughter had to write and essay on for a high school philosophy essay competition: “No man voluntarily pursues evil, or that which he thinks to be evil. To prefer evil to good is not in human nature.” Socrates, in Plato, Protagoras. It was intriguing to read the thought processes of a sixteen-year-old in these days when many of us are despairing of the direction society seems to be heading towards. The other comes from a person working in a university environment upon coming to work to find the passages and some offices awash with water (and we have so little of it in this town!) because someone had left a tap on (kindly try to think that it may have been turned on when we had no water): “Are students and staff too stupid to have taps?” You have hit the nail on the head.

    • Socrates, Plato, Protagoras, Hobbes, Rousseau and so many more. It seems to be the same old question and even the Philosophers can’t find an answer -neither can their students, yet we all try.

Perhaps there is no such thing as “good” or “evil” and everyone defines something different as “good” or “evil” depending on where you are born and which laws (man and nature) you live under?

At the present time, looking around, I can see good but fear that the bad is overpowering by a mile. I see greed for power and money, hate and more hate.

The Germans are ones to know how far depravity and evil can take not just one person, but one whole nation. Human intelligence leading to a nefarious end? That is one possibility. There are enlightened, smart people doing a lot of good out there without harmful effects. But their minds are open, aware and altruistic. While I often despair for the downward trajectory of the human race, I have not yet given up hope for us to try to live a more open and aware coexistence. Like a animal/insect species that over-populates its environment leading to its eventual demise or the seasonal suicide of lemmings, perhaps increasing levels of human stupidity are still a product of evolution at work, trying to change our deleterious effects on others and our environment.

    • We Austrians know it too. I suppose everybody in Europe in our age had ‘felt’ the impact of WWII. Here in the U.S. it’s very extreme at this point in time. People are downright hateful and cruel. Scientific evidence or facts seem worthless, because some worship an ex-President who told them to do so. It’s scary. I am on a low-dose chemotherapy drug (because of RA) I cannot have another booster for COVID, yet when I told my neighbor to be careful, she laughed it of. She drove around in the neighborhood after she had just tested positive for COVID. We, as a society in this country -or perhaps in this world- are at the present time too stupid for this virus. I am downright angry with people who think they can dismiss any kind of logic for ‘stupid’ political opinions.
But…I too know people who are open-minded, kind, forward thinking and kind, but I am afraid they are now in the minority.

  10. Very well reasoned, Bridget. There could be no other conclusion except the one you’ve arrived at: human stupidity. There is also another possibility: mass psychosis.
