…
The last summer was beautiful,
I was lying around in some kind of bay
The sun like fire on the skin,
The smell of the water, nothing is loud
Somewhere in Greece,
A ton of white sand
On my back was just your hand
After two or three weeks I began to feel it,
I inhaled the feeling of life here
All my thoughts were turning around
What used to be important now looked so silly
You sit under an olive tree
Playing with a stone
It’s just so different than back home.
And someday I’m going to stay here
Drop everything around me
Will leave my home forever
On this, I give you my word,
No matter how many years go by,
Someday I’m going to just stay here
In our hectic world
It’s all about power and money
Finances and banks get me down
The bills never quite pays themselves
And someday you’ll ask me
Why I am so tormented
And why I am not already far away,
God knows where.
But it’s not so far to get there
One more thing to do, says vanity
But before I have a heart attack
Or find myself at fourth wearing diapers
I’ll be lying somewhere on the beach,
A bottle of red wine in my hand
And put my feet in the white sand
And someday I’ll just stay here
And someday I’m going to stay there
Let everything go
will leave my home forever more
On this, I give you my word,
No matter how many years go by,
Someday I’m going to just stay here.
Whenever this song plays on my computer, I start singing -loud and false- but always with great enthusiasm. Greece, this beautiful country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas, all of it just too beautiful to not feel at home. The people there are genuinely friendly and interested in the lives of strangers. They live at a different pace. Outside of the big cities you find life as it should be and don’t get me started on the food.
German lyrics with Austrian dialect
Der letzte Sommer war sehr schön
I bin in irgendeiner Bucht g’leg’n
Die Sunn wie Feuer auf der Haut
Du riechst das Wasser und nix is laut
Irgendwo in Griechenland
Jede Menge weißer Sand
Auf mein’n Rück’n nur dei Hand
Nach zwei, drei Wochen hab i’s g’spürt
I hab das Lebensg’fühl dort inhaliert
Die Gedanken drah’n si um
Was z’haus wichtig war is jetzt ganz dumm
Du sitzt bei an Olivenbaum
Und du spielst di mit an Stein
Es is so anders als daham
Und irgendwann bleib i dann durt
Lass’ alles lieg’n und steh’n
Geh’ von daheim für immer fort
Darauf gib i dir mei Wort
Wie viel Jahr’ a noch vergeh’n
Irgendwann bleib i dann durt
In uns’rer Hektomatik-Welt
Dreht si’ alles nur um Macht und Geld
Finanz und Banken steig’n mir drauf
Die Rechnung, die geht sowieso nie auf
Und irgendwann fragst di’ wieso
Quäl i mich da so schrecklich o
Und bin net längst schon weiß Gott wo?
Aber noch is’ net so weit
Noch was zu tun befiehlt die Eitelkeit
Doch bevor der Herzinfarkt
Mi mit 40 in die Windeln prackt
Lieg i schon irgendwo am Strand
A Bottle Rotwein in der Hand
Und steck’ die Füß’ in’ weißen Sand
Und irgendwann bleib i dann durt
Lass’ alles lieg’n und steh’n
Geh’ von daheim für immer fort
Darauf gib i dir mei Wort
Wie viel Jahr’ a noch vergeh’n
Irgendwann bleib i dann durt
Und irgendwann bleib i dann durt
Lass’ alles lieg’n und steh’n
Geh’ von daheim für immer fort
Darauf gib i dir mei Wort
Wie viel Jahr’ a noch vergeh’n
Irgendwann bleib i dann durt

How can I not respond to something this magical. I love it! Thank you, Bridget.
I am glad you liked it.
Really beautiful lyrics and a wonderful message. Thank you for introducing me to this. My favorite verse is:
“You sit under an olive tree
Playing with a stone
It’s just so different than back home.”
Thank you. Greece is very special to me, always has been.
I nice song on a beautiful Sunday. I love acoustic guitar anyway. Thanks for the translation, was very good!
Thank you, Leigha
You are welcome.

I really enjoyed this Bridget. Sung with passion, and enjoyed with great appreciation by the audience. Marvellous, thank you.
I am glad you enjoyed it Peter. It’s one of my all-time favorite Austrian songs and bands.

What a lovely way to start my Sunday! Imagining myself there … feeling the sand between my toes… someday I’m gonna go there 👍🏽❤️✌🏽
Well, we have the heat here in Ohio, just the sand is missing -and the beach and the rest of Greece. 🙂
