How to Prepare for A Puppy

Pour cold apple juice on your carpet, turn off the light, and walk around barefoot in the dark.

Immediately after waking up go outside and stand in the rain and repeat. “Go potty! Go pee-pee! Good dog.” (Five-minute minimum)

Cover your best clothes with dog hair. Use light hair for dark clothing and dark hair for light clothing.

Also, let some dog hair float in your morning coffee.

Empty a full bag of trash on the kitchen floor -spread it out, please.

Play *catch* with a wet, slimy tennis ball.

Run barefoot through the snow to close the garden gate.

Knock over a laundry basket with clean laundry and spread the pieces all over the floor.

Leave your used underwear in the living room, because that’s where you will find it soon -if you are lucky before the guests will arrive.

Hop around on one foot from one side of the house to the other, pretending to look for a shoe.

Jump out of your chair just before your favorite show starts and shout “No No! Do this outside.”

Then later, get up and miss the end of your show.

Pour chocolate pudding on the carpet in the morning and wait until after work to clean it.

Take a screwdriver and carve holes in one leg of your dining table -it will be gnawed anyway.

Then, when you mastered everything I told you to do, take a warm, soft blanket out of the dryer and curl up in it because that’s the feeling you get when a puppy falls asleep on your lap -or on your feet!

Oh we’ve been there! Your wonderful list did make me laugh, though, with the memory of all that it takes. Puppies are so wonderful, but oh the preparation and work! 🙀

    • We just made it through puppy stage and now we are dealing with the ‘young cocky adult’ stage. So much fun (and I don’t want it any other way. )

    • Our Vader (the one resting on my husband’s house shoe) is a Beagleman (Doberman/Beagle mix) we got him when he found his way into our home when he was approximately three months old. Much of the memory of having a puppy around is rather fresh. 🙂

You have me laughing out loud and nodding at the same time. But, of course, the last one makes it all worth while. Love my pups.

    • A friend of mine is thinking about getting a puppy and she asked me how to prepare for it, and this post pretty much sums up what I told her. I also mentioned sloppy kisses, toe licking and counter surfing but I didn’t mention that she might have to share her bed and favorite chair, and that she might get a stalker who watches her when she take a shower. I didn’t want to scare her off. 🙂

She’ll figure those things out for herself. I don’t mind sharing the bed but I haven’t sat on my couch for years.
