The Old Man In Spring

Oh back in my day when I was a youngster
Spring was lovelier than it is today
And that the lovely girls back then were lovelier
Is the only thing that cheers us old men on their way.

Ask your mother, she thinks the same as I do
Nobody knows what’s what before they’re old.
The old have seen a lot and I can tell you
Yours is the age of iron and ours was gold.

It must be true that corn and meadow now
Are not so green and gold as they were then
For if it isn’t true and if they are, how
Would I be able still to visit them?

But that the sun today is ever colder
Then were the splendid suns of yesteryear
Is not a good thing for as you get older
Each year you love the sunshine more and more.

Back then our lives and loves and poetry
Were something else—not what they are today
We’re the only thing that’s still the same. Well, tell me
Who likes you changing once your hair’s gone gray?

—Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956)

Still making memories today, in a sunny square in Faro, with an orchid tree in full bloom, just a few feet away 🤗🩷

    • I collect orchids. For every big milestone, I buy an orchid. I have a few and they bring me so much joy. I saw an orchid tree the last time in Tunisia. They are very impressive.

They are lovely, but can be quite difficult to keep happy. I have owned a few!

        • You don’t keep them happy, they like to be neglected and they do well with abuse 🙂

            • I water mine once a week with three icecubes or 1/2 a cup of water. I never fruitilze, but have a growing lamp that I turn on January. When it’s humid and muggy, I put them outside and voila, the get new blooms that last between four to six months.

Well told and who can say he is wrong? As I get older, I do the comparison thing too. Memories can be a great thing, not always accurate, but a great thing. Happy Sunday. Allan

    • We all do the comparison thing and how could we not. Aging is a bit puzzling at times.
