To The Music~!

I often don’t know what I feel and find myself lost for words. It’s the phase between action and reaction. The time of digesting what I have just witnessed or lived, the period of sorting my feelings.

I don’t have words for it but often find the right music that fits that moment.

A life without music? My life would have been dull without it I suppose. I cannot express it.

Someone so much smarter and better with words found a way to describe what most of us feel.

Music. The breathing of statues. Perhaps:
The quiet of images. You, language where
languages end. You, time
standing straight from the direction
of transpiring hearts.

Feelings, for whom? O, you of the feelings
changing into what?— into an audible landscape.
You stranger: music. You chamber of our heart
which has outgrown us. Our inner most self,
transcending, squeezed out,—
holy farewell:
now that the interior surrounds us
the most practiced of distances, as the other
side of the air:
pure,
enormous
no longer habitable.

Rainer Maria RilkeAn die Musik (To the Music) 1918

The comforting singing of my grandma and the powerful roar of the voices of the singing men in our village, especially during boozy celebrations, still ring in my ears today. Singing together with the children in the school choir is among my best childhood memories. Joie de vivre and joy, grief and anger, excitement and reassurance, play and seriousness, crises and losses, all this was and is only bearable with music. It’s unimaginable for me to be without music.

Austrian Stubenmusik, meaning ‘House music” is a term used in the Alpine region to describe small, concert-style folk music groups. As a child and teenager, I didn’t want anything to do with it, but secretly I enjoyed it. It is part of my childhood, a part I wouldn’t want to miss.

Music enriched my life in many ways.  Music is my emotional anchor.

Without music, life would be a mistake

― Friedrich Nietzsche

I just saw and heard some live music today at the art festival downtown… both a duo and a lone guitarist singing… they were good. Music is a necessity of life! Great post Bridget!

I was in my twenties, before I realised that not everyone listens to music every day.

    • Oh, I am so glad you liked it. See, that’s why Austrian’s refuse to watch “The Sound of Music” because it was normal in every house and farm.

I cannot imagine living without music… as a fiddle player (Irish and Scottish folk) it’s a big part of my life. It’s got me through hard times and brought joy and laughter regularly to me – especially when learning a tricky piece 😂 .
I hadn’t heard Austrian folk music before.. it’s very relaxing 😌

    • I am so glad you liked the Austrian folk music. It’s special because of the zither, a kind of table harp. 🙂 I love Irish fold music, my husband is part Irish.

Life would be much less colourful without music. We are fortunate to be in PEI by the beach right now with an accomplished composer/musician who provides the soundtrack for our vacation. Happy Wednesday Bridget. Allan
