Will I Ever Sort My Travel Pictures?

When we lost everything I left chests and shoeboxes of old pictures from all over the world behind, and only grabbed a few and now they are parked somewhere under a bed or in a closet.

Small photo albums and sleeves with films and pictures, because that’s what we did back then when I was young(er), we took photographs, not too many because getting the pictures developed was expensive.

Tierra del Fuego, is located at the southernmost tip of South America, shared between Argentina and Chile. The name translates to “Land of Fire” in Spanish and is considered the “End of the World” in terms of geography on the continent. Is it worth keeping the picture now at a time when you can find everything and anything on the internet?

Watersking, that I know, but where? No clue!

Finding someone to take a picture when you were traveling alone meant to aks a stranger if he or she could take a picture. It meant handing a rather expensive film camera to a person you had never met before. It meant to trust.

Back at home, somewhere between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

I traveled the world as a translator and somehow there was never time to sort through all the pictures. It’s a bit like it’s today. We all take so many pictures with our cell phones. I look at the amount of pictures and wonder what to do with them.

Will someone ever go through thousands of pictures on my computer? Should I put them in my will?

And where was this picture taken and when?

First class flight with a colleague? French Champagne but where did we fly to? No telling. It wasn’t important enough to develop the film back then, so why care about it now?

Oh, look I had perky boobs once. I remember those. 🙂

This one is easier somewhere in Greece, a few days off, exploring the surroundings on a rented moped for tourists.

Skiing in Italy, the sign gives it away. Right out of the hotel or the restaurant.

The next one is tough. Somewhere in Mexico, smoking of course, with my beloved sunglasses. Sigh…when and exactly where? Again, no clue! Back in the box, you go.

I was very fortunate in my life. I have seen a lot of places and I have met wonderful people on my journeys. I have a heart filled with love and I have memory treasured in my inside chest.

Maybe one day when we are much older, we will go through all the old pictures.

I admit, it’s something on my “might-do- list” that probably never gets done.

Yes! I have tons of pictures too (three generations worth) and wonder who will ever look through them or care to. There is some family history there that in a perfect world I would put together a family tree scrapbook, but again would anyone care. My daughter is of a minimalist generation and takes very few pictures herself. For now they comfort me from time to time with memories of the past.

  4. I do recommend the task. I am fortunate in that I kept all mine in order as I went along, but you are recording not only your own, but also the history of photography. For example you make good points about the cost which prevented us from being as profligate as we are now. I will be leaving mine from both eras in my will

    • I knew that your photographs were in order. You have posted many of them and you always knew exactly where and when the pictures had been taken. Thank you, Derrick.

Wonderful to see you, so young and full of life. I know it’s all stored in your brain somewhere but now and again it’s just nice to pull the box out and look. I mustn’t do it today, or I’ll get nothing else done. You were beautiful then, and you’re beautiful still.

    • You are very kind, Jo. It’s fun to see the younger version of me once in a while. What a great life I had (still have). The pictures come with many stories and those I have in order (in my head).

The photos are indeed proof that you’ve been many wonderful places and it’s so nice to have that record. I have my own boxes of photos, as well as photos I’ve inherited that aren’t labeled well. I likely should toss most of them. LOL! But I can’t seem to do it. You were having fun in these photos and I think that may be reason enough to keep them. 😉

    • As I told Jo, I have my stories sorted and in order, in my head and the pictures are just a bi-product. Somehow they were never that important, or I simply didn’t have the time to go through all of them. You are right, I have seen so many interesting places and I am entirely grateful.

    • It’s always so good to see you back online, Debra. ‘Inherited pictures’ goodness, we have a briefcase full with photos, given to us by an older relative. We have no idea who the people in the pictures are, but we haven’t tossed the briefcase yet.

A great story Bridget. It is nice to take that stroll down memory lane from time to time. I always meant to grab my childhood pictures from my sister, but never got to it in time. Her house burned down a few years back, with all those old memories inside. I still recall the odd one from time to time, but with both parents gone, I wish I had those pictures. Shortly after retirement, I digitized all my old analogue photos and have them stored on a hard drive and a back up in a fire safe. Will anyone look at them when I am gone? Probably not, but they are organized and waiting to find out. Cheers. Allan

    • I try not to linger in the past for too long. It’s nice to recall places and some of the stories that go with it, but it’s more important to live in the here and now -no matter how old we are. I have known too many older people who seemed to have given up on life, or who thought that only their past was worth talking about, I don’t want to be one of them. I think sorting the pictures might indeed be good to do after I retire -if I ever. Thanks, Allan.

  9. A lovely glimpse of times past, but you’re right, what do we do with all those pictures – especially when the family line has a definite end!

    • You are right, both of our family lines will come to an end. Would I have sorted my pictures if we would have kids? Good question. I doubt it.

About 4-5 times a year I get prints made from photos on my phone by Snapfish. And a photo book. But now I have all those to contend with! Lol. I love these pictures of your adventurous life! 😍

I love looking through old pictures. Yours are great! Mine are all in albums and labelled. (A habit I got from my mom.) I didn’t bring all of them to Spain but left boxes full at my daughter’s place in Canada. When I visit her, I look through some. Of course for the last 10 years everything is on my computer. Who will look through them when I’m gone?

    • I wonder the same thing. All our lives are now captured in hundreds and thousands of pictures. Imagine how much time it would take to look through all of them?

I assume my phone and computer pictures will die with me, or I will lose them by accident when one of my electronic devices will crush.
