…
In an effort to get people to look
into each other’s eyes more,
and also to appease the mutes,
the government has decided
to allot each person exactly one hundred
and sixty-seven words, per day.
When the phone rings, I put it to my ear
without saying hello. In the restaurant
I point at chicken noodle soup.
I am adjusting well to the new way.
Late at night, I call my long-distance lover,
proudly say I only used fifty-nine today.
I saved the rest for you.
When she doesn’t respond,
I know she’s used up all her words,
so I slowly whisper I love you
thirty-two and a third times.
After that, we just sit on the line
and listen to each other breathe.
“The Quiet World” By Jeffrey McDaniel
Maybe not every day, but I wish for more silence some days. The turmoil in my head needs it, the heartbreak in my heart would love it, and the joy I still have longs for it too.
We think in silence, don’t we? Perhaps more thinking might be the ultimate goal? Preferably before we take action – and not after?
Just typing….quietly

I’m getting aware that silence becomes more and more important to me, too! Many thanks for your thoughts!
Thank you Martina. I think many of us feel that way.
What a great poem! Thanks for the share. We could all do with a little more quiet.
I would appreciate one day of silence in the week. I could need it, my head is spinning.
I hope you get your silence.
Beautiful share, Bridget. Thank you and take care. 🕊️
Thank you, Michele.
The constant background noise from politics and media is deafening. Time to turn it off for a while for sure. I do not need to hear one thing analyzed 7 ways…ever. Have a good Thursday. Allan
I am so over it already. This will be very long four years.
We all suffer from over stimulation
We tend to have the radio on as background in the evening. If I’m home in the daytime I like to escape to the roof. It’s quiet… apart from building noise!
Oh, I do like this post. I’m all for quiet, preferably interspersed with bird song, the wind through the trees, the sound of a stream, or crashing waves on the seashore!
The distant quit sounds of nature, such a perfect background for our inner silence. Thank you, Peter.
I am finally retired, and a long time widowed- so silence is a part of my life. And I love it! Not only can I not listen to anything that might ruin my day, I CAN listen to anything I want any time i want and I love it. Can you tell? Your silence is coming. Be careful what you wish for. Silence is not for everyone. But it is for me.
Stillness has always been my friend. I might enjoy a concert or a loud party for a short time, but then I long for stillness. I need quiet times (down times) to regroup mentally as well as physically.
