Whatever~!

I dislike questions like that. How could you improve your community? They misguide us and quite often, they leave us feeling small and little. Am I doing enough?

Every smile to a neighbor makes your community a better place. Every piece of trash that you pick up that has been placed in your front yard either by the wind or by humans who feel the need to leave their waste behind – often thrown out of a driving window. All these little things make your community a better and nicer place.

Checking in on your neighbor. Shoveling the driveway of an elderly, buying a glass of lemonade at the kid’s Lemonade Stand, even though you can’t stand it and it will irritate your stomach -again.

All these little things make not just our communities but also the world a better place.

Forget the big plans to make your community nicer, because they are mostly brought up at community meetings, because the fellows we voted in need something to do as well.

In my humble opinion, we often aim too high when we should stay low.

We think too big and overlook the small things.

We are too fast when slow and steady wins the race.

So many of us do nothing – or they think they do nothing – because the big picture is overwhelming. How could you improve your community? Really?

For heaven’s sake, most of us are already doing it daily.

Where did we start?

We started small, and we began quietly. It’s not about honors, awards, or glory; it’s about doing something that’s not spectacular, not asked for, not ordered.

The power we have to change things little by little should never be underestimated.

I know, I have seen it. I am at it – and so are you!

One of the ways I try to support my community is by shopping at local stores vs chain stores if possible. Go to craft fairs and the farmer’s market in the spring. All the products are usually better and it helps people in my area. It does good to keep doing those little things. … and aren’t we all suckers for the kids lemonade stands – bad tasting kids lemonade is STILL BETTER than a bottle of mass produced stuff sold at Walmart.

Yes, that’s true, isn’t it. We’re all doing the little things to better our worlds. Today I let someone go ahead of me at the grocery store. Earlier in the week I brought my frightened elderly neighbor over to my house during a stormy power outage. Tomorrow who knows. But I have been feeling powerless myself, so thanks for reminding me none of us are without the ability to make something better.

    • I truly believe that all the little things each one of us do – and can do – make a big difference.
I feel powerless as well and it seems to get worse with each passing day. I have to remind myself to keep on doing what I am doing.

  5. If you do the little things everywhere you go, those little things snowball quickly. When I go to the beach in the summer, it takes me forever to get to the bathroom because I’m picking up garbage the whole way. 🙂

    • As you know, I grew up in the mountains and even as a child, way before environmental awareness, it bothered me when I saw tourists leaving trash behind in the grass, or at the resting spots. I am glad to know you are a ‘garbage picker’ as well. Have a great weekend.

I burst out laughing at your comment about the lemonade! I buy it, too, and I don’t drink it either! This is such important advice. One can get overwhelmed thinking about changing a community. But what you said is so true, just being present, friendly and caring to the people in your neighborhood can change so much. 🥰

    • I am glad it made you laugh. I don’t touch lemonade very often, because it gives me terrible acid reflux..but like you, I buy it 🙂

  7. Normally, those blowing their own trumpet are so busy doing so that they have no time to get anything done. Meanwhile, there are millions of people quietly doing their best to help their community!

    • I am guilty of blowing the trumpet (I think). I often do it to spread awareness on certain subjects or organizations.
You are so right, millions of people do quietly little things every day and all of them make the world a better place.

Absolutely right. Thank you for reminding me… I’m already on the job just by doing the little things regularly and with good intentions. 🤗

    • “Good intentions” that’s all that matters, even if it sometimes backfires. I am glad you commented.
