Still kicking…

I woke up, that’s the most profound thing that happens every day so far – and I am grateful. As so often, I opened my eyes ten minutes before Alexa could play my wake-up song. A silly tune that makes me smile the same way I grinned when I was a young child.

After waking up, I start a quick assessment of my aging body. The pain level is not bad, a bit stiff as expected but a few stretches will hopefully take care of it. Aging is a tricky beast but it has its entertaining moments. When did I stop jumping out of bed?

I am a morning person -trained myself to be one. By nature, I would have the sleep rhythm of a bartender. I am a cheerful Pain-in-the-butt in the mornings. Only the dogs appreciate my sunny deposition, my husband wishes for me to be more quiet. He needs his morning wake-up time, which I give him occasionally because I am a nice person (mostly).

“Do you have to be so cheerful in the mornings,” he asked me about 20 years ago and I assured him that I could not help it. His face showed pain when he heard me say “Good morning Sunshine,” which amused me a bit. Being cheerful! It’s an inherited disease, my grandma was cheerful in the mornings too. Maybe it’s a wicked way of torture we like to give to the people we love? Come to think of it, it must be an Austrian/German thing because the nuns in boarding school were cheerful in the mornings as well.

Waking up in the morning and being able to get out of bed should never be underestimated. To have a comfortable bed, and to get a good night’s sleep. Not being interrupted by bombs or shootings, not fearing for your life, not waking up with hunger in your belly.

Yes, the way we wake up, it’s profound.

I wake up in a decent mood most days, just grateful to have had some good sleep and being able to get out of bed is reason enough to celebrate. But I’m not overtly cheerful until I have had a couple of cups of coffee! You sound better balanced than I am. LOL!

So is the music from one of these two videos your wake up song? They were both good, but I really love the rhythms in that second one! I am usually pretty slow and stiff in the mornings, but there are mornings I do awaken with a smile. It is always a good day though, because it is one more day to see the good and beauty left in the world.

    • I change my music every months. I have an Alexa on my nightstand and this week it’s Cat Steven’s “Morning has broken”. As for the song in my post. I listened to the German Version, it brought back nice memories.

Guten Morgen, guten Morgen – hier scheint die Sonne recht gut aber kalt ist es wohl . . . sugar, I had not heard Nana Mouskouri for a decade methinks . . . and, no, no, no, altho’ I am hugely glad to wake up in the morning – that is if pain has allowed me to sleep at all – I am very much an evening person and absolutely ‘scream’ if anyone asks me how I am before about 9am and after a huge mug of hot, black coffee with a herring or anchovy sandwich on black bread . . . then hopefully I am humanoid 🙂 !!!

    • Oh my, you are the first person in my lifetime who likes anchovies and admits it. I thought I am the only one 🙂

  5. How inspiring, whatever time of day we roll out of bed. I get moving around noon, myself, when I get around to it. But I enjoy cheerful music at any time. Seeing people enjoying dance reminds me how great dance is for stretching lazy body parts.

    • Dance and stretching matches perfectly, doesn’t it?

  6. You’re right-stretching is very beneficial to rousing our bodies into a waking and functional state. 🙂

    • “Waking and functional state”, not necessarily a given together, that made me giggle.

  7. I absolutely agree with you that to wake up after a good night’s sleep, without bombs, shootings, or because we are hungry, is something very precious! Many thanks for your reminder, Bridget!

    • I have the tendency to forget this as well, so this was a great opportunity to remind myself of my privileges.
