Elderberry fruits and blooms are different. The blooms are white and that’s what is used to make lemonade and syrup from, the fruit itself is very berry-blue and tastes totally different.
So many memories. When I was a kid, from age 10 – 21 we had elderberries in our back yard. And mom mom, being ever frugal and not one to waste ANYTHING, had us pick them, which wasn’t hard, snipping the full, purple heads into a paper bag, but then we had to strip all the berries off those little stems. That took FOREVER. Then she made jam, and used them in apple pies (I have no idea why). I thought the flavor was bitter, and she usually didn’t make jam entirely with elderberry. It was usually mixed in with other stuff, but we called it elderberry jam.
It’s an Elderberry one of my favorite plants. Where I come from it’s called “Hollunder” the flowers (white) give you a wonderful syrup that can be turned into lemonade, which I loved when I was a child. The fruit itself, the berry, is dark purple and delicious, but not safe to eat raw. They are used for marmalades and jams. they are pretty tasty.
Thanks for the concise reply . . . yes, I have heard of ‘elderberry syrup’ but have never had ir to the best of my knowledge. Absolutely beautiful colour. Must look it up in Estonian 🙂 !
Wow! For all sorts of reasons this is a fantastic photo. I have never had elderberry before. Do you still drink the lemonade on occasion?
