New Year’s Evening – Just Thinking

Last updated on January 2, 2026

The old year has been good to me
That’s in retrospect, of course
Because from this perspective
All bad looks smaller.

I am holding on to the good
Clinging desperately to values
I find myself treasuring nature
and all that’s still real

I am not letting go of what is true
Not much artificial about me
Other than hair color and a tooth or twenty
Which should be alright

The bad? Where to begin?
Will it end?
Is my darkness, someone else’s light?
Are my hopes other people’s fears?

The goodness, it’s out there
It’s all around me
I feel it, we’re it!
Screw the rest!

I’m waving goodbye to the old year
I hate to see it go
What will the New Year bring?
A silent whisper inside me, “You’ll find out.”

Alexandra Lynn (grin)
Still the Happy Quitter
New Year’s Evening 2025

Written under the influence of 2 glasses of bubbly. We’ll be in bed by 10 pm.

WOW! A great picture, you are so beautiful! I love the picture! The poem is a great way to start the year. With the Super Bowl frame behind you I have to ask, are you a fan or is that hubby’s? I grew up watching football with mom and dad and after the ’85 Bears season into the Super Bowl I have been a fan. They are usually the underdogs, but doing pretty good this year. I hope 2026 is one of your best years… get that book in the top ten list!

    • My husband is the football fan in our house. I watch some games, but can’t get into it and believe me I tried. I am a soccer fan and every two years when I watch either FIFA or the word championship I am on my worst behavior when I watch TV.
Thank you for your kind words. I wish you a great year as well. I think we all could use it. I assume ‘peace on earth’ flew out of the window.

My daughter has started following soccer some. I suppose if I learned more about the game it would be fun to watch. I get the behavior thing – I yell at the TV (just like my mom did) watching football like they can hear me. ⚽🏈

    • No, I didn’t use this or any image of me in my book. I explained it in the author bio. I want to shed light on the houseless and homeless and not on me, because it’s a subject that not many openly talk about it. Even though it’s my story (our story) I dedicated my book to all the houseless and homeless (and to all the landlords who love dogs).

Such a beautiful image. It’s so nice to put a face to your words!
Happy New Year. I was out dancing with our dancing 🕺 💃 studio friends. Such a wonderful evening getting home past 1pm – into bed past 2pm. Life definitely gets better with age!

    • Dancing is so much fun. I always loved to dance, and guess what? I married a man who has two left feet and no rhythm. 🙂 I am so glad you had fun.

When we started dancing in our mid to late 50s – eighteen years ago – my man had two left feet and couldn’t turn quickly else he’d be dizzy. Today he is one of the best males on the floor. It’s never too late! 😊

        • That’s wonderful and very impressive. I am so glad you both enjoy dancing. My husband is hopeless. I dance alone in my living room (or kitchen) and enjoy it.

Two beautiful photos I’ll definitely not let go from my files but the year past can run away from me as fast as possible – PLEASE! I am more experienced in this ‘time scenario’ than you by a whole host of hours on our New Year’s Day afternoon . . . same, same I hate to tell you, Alexandra . . . and I also was in bed by some 11pm . . . wanted to be ‘smiley’ this morning . . . bestest as always >>>

And . . . now I know exactly that you are 8 hours ahead and one day behind me, if that kind of mathematics makes any sense to you . . . 🙂 !

    • I hope the New Year will be extra kind to you. I know you had a tough year. As for the photo, Thank you. I think that’s the second or third time in 11 years of blogging that I ‘show’ myself. Which I will probably reverse tomorrow in the morning, after coffee. 🙂
I love that you call me Alexandra, I always loved my middle name, it’s so much nicer than Bridget. Happy New Year to Eha.

Oh, unfortunately, I tend to have a somewhat ‘naughty’ sense of humour – you will find yourself called either/or I am afraid . . . but your forthcoming book does make me think of ‘A’ rather than ‘B’ 🙂 ! . . . hugs across the Pond . . .
