Photo of the Day – Gratulálok, Hungary!

This is a press photo. Borrowed from the internet.

My Austrian soul is celebrating, and how could it not? We were once one. The Austrian-Hungarian Empire! I remember my first vacation very well. How surprised I was when my grandma told me we would visit our neighboring state, a country I knew nothing about.

Back then, I got a history lesson, and I fell in love with the Hungarian people and all the beauty this country offers—and believe me, there is a lot to see.

Yesterday, in the afternoon here in the US, I turned on BBC America, and just a few hours after the polls had closed in Hungary, it was already clear. I got tears in my eyes when I saw all these people in Hungary on the streets, celebrating the fall of a 16-year-long dictatorship by Viktor Orbán.

It was a landslide victory. The new leader and Prime Minister, Peter Magyar (Magyar literally means Hungarian), gave his victory speech to thousands of people who had gathered along the Danube River in the capital, Budapest. The 45-year-old made it short and sweet:

“Tonight, truth prevailed over lies”.

“Today, we won because Hungarians didn’t ask what their homeland could do for them; they asked what they could do for their homeland. You found the answer. And you followed through”.

The people in Hungary have spoken, and they have spoken loud and clear for Europe and the European Union. They showed up and cast their vote against Putin, against Netanyahu, and sadly against the leadership here in the United States.

Gratulálok, Hungary! (Congratulations)

From the bottom of my heart!
