Somewhere in the World Today

I am under the weather. Our yard is flooded. It has been a crazy summer. The dogs enjoy playing in the mud and reward me with muddy pawprints. I try to cheer myself up because I have the tendency to feel sorry for myself when I have a simple cold. I don’t like feeling so blah. Today I searched for oddities in the world news: for the things that make us shake our heads and we stare at the screen and wonder what on Earth people were thinking.

Europe

Germany — A sheep takes the bus

An escaped sheep in Lüdinghausen, North Rhine-Westphalia, wandered into a regional bus depot and boarded a bus while employees were cleaning vehicles. Because of the bus’s position, police officers accompanied the sheep aboard while the vehicle went through the bus wash. The animal was then safely removed and returned to its owner.

Netherlands — 363 kilograms of peanut butter becomes art

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam recreated Peanut-Butter Platform, a work by Dutch conceptual artist Wim T. Schippers, who died earlier this year. The installation consists of approximately 363 kilograms — 800 pounds — of peanut butter spread across a gallery floor. Schippers first presented the concept in the 1960s.

Wales — World Bog Snorkelling Championships

Llanwrtyd Wells is preparing for the World Bog Snorkelling Championships on August 30. Competitors wearing masks, snorkels and flippers race through a water-filled trench cut into a peat bog. Conventional swimming strokes are prohibited. The event has been held annually since 1985.

France — French MEP bitten by a viper

French member of the European Parliament Manon Aubry was hospitalized after being bitten by a viper. Aubry subsequently posted photographs from hospital and said she had experienced complications from the venom. She noted that fewer than 300 viper bites are recorded annually in France.

United Kingdom — Edinburgh’s deliberately strange theater

The 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe includes numerous productions built around absurdist theater, clowning and unconventional performance. This year’s program ranges from surreal comedy to experimental shows in which unusual costumes, props, audience participation and intentionally strange premises form the performances themselves.

Japan — A shrew changes the shape of its head for winter

Research on long-clawed shrews found that the animals undergo unusual seasonal changes to their skulls. While parts of the skull shrink during winter, the shrew’s snout becomes proportionally longer. Researchers believe the change may help warm cold air before it reaches the animal’s lungs.

Asia

Singapore — Diving suits for cyborg cockroaches

Researchers at Nanyang Technological University have developed miniature underwater breathing equipment for Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The insects are fitted with electronic backpacks that allow researchers to control their movement. The additional equipment supplies oxygen to their breathing openings and can allow the cockroaches to remain underwater for extended periods. (I promise, I am not pulling your leg),

The technology is being investigated for possible search-and-rescue work in flooded pipes, collapsed structures and other areas difficult for humans or conventional robots to reach.

South Korea — An AI dating television show

South Korean broadcaster Mnet has introduced “My AI Partner: Are You My Ideal Type?”, an unscripted television program examining relationships between humans and AI-generated romantic partners. Participants interact with partners designed around personal preferences while the program explores whether an apparently ideal companion being artificial changes the relationship.

Malaysia — Motorcycle offenders sent to a prayer room

During a Kuala Lumpur police operation targeting illegal and dangerous motorcycle activity, officers inspected 778 motorcycles, issued 495 summonses and seized 41 motorcycles. Some young riders were also taken to a prayer room, where police instructed them to reflect on their behavior.

Singapore — Man enters ex-girlfriend’s home to retrieve PlayStation

A Singapore man used an old door password to enter his former girlfriend’s home without permission. He said he wanted to retrieve his PlayStation console. When he entered, another man was reportedly inside playing video games. The incident eventually became a criminal case.

India — The Cockroach Janta Party

A youth-oriented Indian political movement adopted the name Cockroach Janta Party after young unemployed Indians were compared with cockroaches. Rather than rejecting the description, organizers incorporated the cockroach into the group’s identity. The movement subsequently attracted a substantial following on social media.

China — Pickup truck converted into a swimming pool

Three men in Xining lined the cargo bed of a pickup truck with plastic, filled it with water and used it as a mobile swimming pool during hot weather. Two men sat in the water while a third drove the truck through the city. Traffic police stopped the vehicle. Authorities said the large quantity of moving water created a safety risk; the driver was fined and received penalty points. (Interestingly enough, a truck bed pool is very common in the rural areas in the U.S.)

Africa

South Africa — The snake that was actually a lizard

Visitors to Kruger National Park photographed a long, dark reptile moving across a road. Although the animal closely resembled a snake, it was identified as a legless lizard. Legless lizards are lizards whose limbs have disappeared or become greatly reduced through evolution and are biologically distinct from snakes.

South Africa — More than 200 supercars gather for rhinos

More than 200 supercars assembled at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit for the 2026 Supercar Rhino Run. The event brought together Ferraris, Lamborghinis and other exotic cars while raising money for the care of orphaned rhinoceroses. The gathering achieved a record-breaking turnout.

Australia & the Pacific

Australia — Male redback spiders somersault toward the female’s mouth

Researchers studying Australian redback spiders have examined the species’ unusual mating behavior. During mating, the male performs a “self-sacrificial somersault,” positioning his abdomen over the female’s mouthparts. The female may begin eating the male while mating continues. Researchers have been investigating the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms behind the behavior.

Pacific Ocean — Squid that fly above the ocean

Neon flying squid can propel themselves from the ocean by forcing water from their bodies.

Once airborne, they spread their fins and tentacles and glide above the surface before returning to the water. Observations indicate that groups of the squid can launch at approximately the same time, producing groups of airborne squid above the sea.

North America

Oregon — Two pygmy goats board a city bus

Two seven-month-old pygmy goats named Billy the Kid and Billy the Goat escaped from their home in Portland. The goats wandered to a public-transit stop and were recorded following passengers aboard a city bus.

The driver reopened the doors, and a passenger helped persuade the goats to leave the vehicle.

Rhode Island — Truck spills squid across an intersection

A tractor-trailer overturned in Narragansett and spilled a large quantity of squid onto the roadway.

The intersection remained closed for approximately eight hours while emergency crews removed the vehicle and cleaned up the seafood.

Texas — Police chase an escaped lemur

Police officers in Belton were called after a lemur was seen running loose. Officers pursued the animal before eventually capturing it and transferring it to animal-control personnel. Belton police described the lemur as “fast, furry and refusing to cooperate.”

California — Pig runs through West Hollywood

A loose pig was filmed running through streets in West Hollywood while several people attempted to catch it.

The animal was eventually captured.

Kentucky — Bear enters house and eats leftover KFC

A Kentucky homeowner discovered a black bear inside his house after the animal apparently entered through an open window. The bear found leftover Kentucky Fried Chicken and ate it.

Wildlife officials were able to get the bear out of the house. (Not sure if the chicken could be rescued 🙂 )

Canada

Alberta — Young grizzly escapes at Calgary Zoo

A one-year-old grizzly bear temporarily escaped its enclosure at the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. Visitors were moved to safe locations while zoo personnel responded. The bear remained outside its enclosure only briefly before staff secured the situation.

Science Oddities

A giant “spider” on the Sun

Solar observations captured a large prominence whose shape resembled a giant spider extending from the edge of the Sun. The structure was actually plasma suspended and shaped by the Sun’s magnetic field. Solar prominences can extend hundreds of thousands of kilometres from the solar surface.

The narwhal’s “unicorn horn” is a tooth

Research continues to reveal the unusual biology of the narwhal’s long tusk.

The spiral structure, which can reach approximately three metres in length, is actually an elongated tooth.

For centuries, narwhal tusks brought to Europe were sold and displayed as supposed unicorn horns. Wealthy collectors and royal households paid large sums for them before the animal’s true identity became widely understood.
