I watch more TV or
lose myself in a screen,
far away from real life
and authentic people.
Connecting with strangers
whom I will treat like friends.
Not pushing real humans away
but I have less time for them.
I have two lives now:
a real one, where I am genuine
and a virtual existence
where I can be, even if I am not.
One life holds me accountable
the other one gives me too much freedom
I can say what I want,
offend and misbehave if I feel like it
I can brag and pray, curse and judge
all to my liking, as often as needed
One click, and it all goes away.
One click and I interact with the world.
I remember the values,
the morals, the honor codes,
the traditions, the beliefs,
the human rules we used to live by.
They fade away more and more,
which seems to be normal now.
Others don’t seem to remember at all
The old ways are gone.
The Happy Quitter 2026

Well said!
Although all online relationships are not without merit. One of my absolute best friends I discovered here on WordPress when she made a comment on someone else’s blog about a phone game I was playing too at the time. And then she introduced me to one of her other online friend who now is my boyfriend of almost four years. But I do get what you are saying. So often social media has comments that are so nasty and down right cruel… we never would had said anything close to such a thing in person growing up. And it is all ages too. That “security” of being in a non-physical electronic world brings out the absolute worst in some. And it also depend on the sight. I have not really seen much for backstabbing here, but I know Facebook is loaded with it.
Here I go again, babbling away. This is a very honest and well written comment on where society resides these days, unfortunately.
What the world has come to
I’m sorry for you and our actual situation and I feel that you are right! Many thanks for your thoughts!
This generation, and perhaps the next one, won’t know there ever were any codes of behavior, and will also lose the ability to sustain real relationships if we’re not careful.
Sadly, we fear the same (sigh).
