A whimpering beside my bed woke me up. 2:30 am, way too early to get up, but it seemed the dogs wanted to go outside. This time the weather forecast had been correct, the wind was hauling and it was bright outside in the middle of the night. The first snow this year came with a vengeance and covered the biggest part of the United States under a white blanket.

It was so terribly cold. Snow was falling, and it was almost dark. Evening came on, the last evening of the year. In the cold and gloom a poor little girl, bareheaded and barefoot, was walking through the streets. Of course, when she had left her house she’d had slippers on, but what good had they been?

Our farm was with one foot in Italy, so Italian food and liquors could be found in our fridge and cellar all year around. I grew up enjoying the Austrian-Hungarian meals at home, and appreciated the German cooking during the week, even though it was in a boarding school, and some of the food they served seemed highly questionable.

Homemade Christmas gifts. How much we appreciate and cherish them, yet we seldom take the time to make them ourselves. Perhaps this could be the year when many of us will remember the wonderful tradition, and we will spend time making presents instead of buying them?

Santa, in his infinite wisdom, decided to bring me a battery-operated, cordless snow shovel for Christmas.

Santa, who, as you know, I happen to sleep with, sat in his chair and watched me unpack. He grinned from one ear to the other, like he had just won the lottery. I believe in being grateful. One doesn’t complain about a present ever -you return later, after the Holidays- but a cordless, battery-operated snowblower? Seriously?
