From an early age on, like every other little girl, I was doomed to help with the dishes. While my grandma washed them, I stood beside her, toweled the plates and cups dry, and made sure that the old silverware and the glasses were spotless and shiny.

During my childhood, it became clear to me that I perceived things differently than other kids my age. I became sad very quickly and took the suffering of other people very much to heart. When we watched a sad movie, I burst into tears and was heartbroken. This earned me the reputation of being very “touchy” and or overly sensitive. We don’t know his birthday. We took him in on August 5th, 2022 when he was approximately three months old, and decided a few months later that May 5th will be known to the world as Vader’s birthday, which makes today his first birthday.

Twelve years ago, in 2010 -the first Thanksgiving after a couple of months of being houseless/homeless- was the last time I added grocery prices up the way I did this year. For whatever reason, this year I felt the same mix of emotions as I did back then.

Just the other day I pulled a staple out of my sneakers. The sole had taken the abuse and had protected my feet from getting hurt. I thanked my shoes for doing such a good job and it felt odd at first. Who in the right state of mind, says THANK YOU to the shoes?

His smile gave it all away, he was beaming with joy. “Throw it all in the dumpster,” the manager had ordered when the company he worked for delivered new cubicles and panel systems, and that’s when my husband spoke up and had asked if he could take them instead. Before the day was over, he had written permission, stating he could take all the cabinets and worksurfaces.
