Friends come in many forms and sizes

snoopy-happy-dance1

In Kindergarten I met a little boy and we became friends the very first day. We shared our lunches, played together and we were sure nothing could ever tear us apart.

He was my best friends for many years; Aids took him from me over 10 years ago. I think about him often, I still miss him and wish he would be still here. He always dreamed of marrying his partner, his dreams came true – I wish he could see it.

In college I talked to the girl beside me and we clicked, we became best friends that day and our friendship lasted until the day she died. That was 2 years ago and I miss her terribly, more than I can say. She  taught me that you can laugh when you are dying; she showed me that every day is worth living no matter what.

I am lucky, because I am married to my best friend, but he happens to be male and doesn’t always understand important things like shoe shopping or wine tasting.

I think friends come in all form and sizes and many stay with us for a lifetime, while others just stay for a little while.

Back then when I was little,
I thought you could have only one best friend,
but that wasn’t true.
I found out that if you allow your heart to open up,
you will meet many friends.

One friend will say, “Let’s cry together,”
another, “Let’s fight together,”
another, “Let’s walk away together.”

One friend will meet your intellectual need,
another your shoe fetish,
another your love for books.
One will be with you in your seasons of confusion,
another will be your clarifier,
another the wind beneath your wings.

But whatever their assignment in your life,
they will be there if you let them.

They will meet you with their gym shoes on and hair pulled back,
and will hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself.

They will laugh about you and with you, no matter what.

They will share your tears and your pain.
Those are your best friends.

It may all be wrapped up in one person, but for many, it’s wrapped up in several.

I have been very, very lucky in my life…still am. 🙂

    • Thank you, it didn’t mean it as a tribute, but somehow it turned out to be one.

Bridgett, this made me tear up right from the beginning. I get that way just seeing images like you put up! I’ve never been able to let people in much, and I knew when I read “I found out that if you allow your heart to open up, you will meet many friends” that that’s the answer. Luckily, it’s never too late, huh? I finally got my new blog up http://scoutsthoughts.wordpress.com/ and ended my healing blog/mandy. I’ll go by Scout now. Thanks for the beautiful post. You’re writing is lovely.

    • Pushing people away is a defense mechanism. I guess the theory behind it is that you can’t get hurt, if you don’t let anybody come close.

Well said, Bridget. Friends come in many forms and each one is dear to me .. but for different reasons. I can’t imagine a world without any friends.

    • Same here. He just doesn’t “get” some things…not matter how much I try to explain it. Shoe shopping is one of them lol
