Below the Surface

depths

“Errors, like straws, upon the surface flow;
He who would search for pearls must dive below.”
― John Dryden,

Sometimes I wish the world would darken for just one week, and the Gods would leave this earth. No sun, no natural or artificial light, just darkness would cover the whole planet. If all of what we can see would be taken away, what would we focus on?

No Gods to worship, no churches and temples to hide in.

Unable to see, we would have to depend on our other senses. Maybe we would not just hear, but also listen?

Could we smell fear then? Could we taste the rain and touch happiness?

No colors, no distraction, black or white, red or brown, it wouldn’t matter. In the hours of darkness, we would all become equal. It wouldn’t matter how we look like and nobody could see what we wear.

Rich or poor, we all would be just a voice, a whisper in the universe. What’s left to hate, if we can’t point it out?

Would we still swim in shallow waters, or would we finally dive deep?
