Anti-Valentines or Friendship Dinner?

If you have a Meetup group with a bunch of women over 50+, not all of them are happily married or in a relationship. At a wine tasting last summer, the subject DATING came up and the stories and anecdotes the ladies shared with us, had us roaring with laughter. (Also, it made me hug my husband tight when I came home.)

Dating in your 50’s -that doesn’t sound like fun. If something would happen to my husband, would I ever consider dating again? While neither he or I are perfect alone, we are perfect together, and I cannot picture myself trying to find a new partner. I have a feeling my marriage will not end, just because one of us won’t be around anymore.

Not everybody has or had a happy marriage. Some of our ladies consider themselves HAPPILY DIVORCED and they enjoy their newfound freedom -they are comfortable and content alone.

Financial independence seems to have a lot to do with the desire to date again -that’s what I got from listening. (There is a lesson to be learned oh, young ones!)

Sadly, some of the women never had a great relationship and would love to finally find the perfect match -someone to grow old(er) with. We even have widows, who lost their partners too early and while some of them seem to be LOOKING, others are comfortable living alone.

When I planned the Valentines dinner with my husband this year, I couldn’t help but think about the single ladies in my Meetup group.

For tonight I posted an evening event, a dinner at one of my favorite Asian restaurants that is known not just for good food, but also for awesome cocktails and desserts and 17 of our ladies will meet tonight. The ladies will spend Valentines Day with a bunch of women their age -even some new faces have RSVP’ed.

A Valentine’s Friendship dinner or an Anti-Valentines dinner…it’s up to them. Either way, I am sure they will have fun. I know I will hear about it -hopefully, they will take pictures.

I don’t think my marriage is perfect – we’re both too head-strong and Husband just fails to recognize that I’m always right 😉
… but I know I’m pretty damn lucky, and I have a lot of sympathy for those who are lonely. Valentine’s Day is a tough one for the lonely.

  3. Happy Wednesday Bridget. We don’t do Valentines, far too commercial for our simple tastes! After 43 and a bit years we fit together pretty well.

    • Valentine’s day is an American “thing” I suppose. My husband and I wouldn’t miss it for the word. It’s a nice excuse for some extra chocolate and some flowers. 🙂

My hubs and I are perfectly matched, but before I met him, I was quite content to go it alone… kinda. 🙂

As not-so-a-spring-chicken myself, I can understand the different views. I have been divorced, single, married, many variants, and as they say, rich would be better than poor in most of those situations. I think that if a person is financially comfortable, it enables so much more breathing space about making choices in life, including about dating. Have a fun night out! It’s great you have such nice women to spend time with and enjoy.

    • I will spend a nice evening with my husband at home and will not attend the Friendship Valentine’s dinner. That’s for the single ladies. 🙂
