I know how Paradise has to look like, I have pictured it in my mind a thousand times when I was a little girl.
All the beauty of nature combined, that was the most perfect place I could imagine. Water as blue as the Grotta Azzurra, white sand, hills, and mountains to climb. There was no question in my mind, it was a quiet place, a place where I could run and jump, hike or swim whenever I wanted to.
Now, 50 years older, but the still the little girl at heart, I finally found it. While my beliefs have changed, my search for the “perfect” places has always continued.
The untouched beauty of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is known for its dramatic rock cliffs. With summer coming to an end, it was the perfect place to go before the winter chills.
Unusual sandstone formations like Miners Castle or Chapel Rock are only two of the parks many attractions.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore hugs the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s an untouched beauty that took my breath away.
It is worth the drive. The pictures are burned into my mind and will stay with me for a very long time.
Now winter can come.

Based on these photos alone, I will add this to my bucket list as a place to visit if/when I ever actually get up to Michigan. Our future son-in-law just finished an internship in Kalamazoo. His family and bride-to-be enjoyed a summer vacation in nearby Saginaw and the photos he showed my made this California girl realize that there are many shorelines elsewhere in the US than my native West Coast.

Joanne, it’s not too far from you either. Actually I think you might be closer (too lazy to as Google.)
I did look it up. It’s about a 9 hour drive (not including stops) which isn’t too bad. The terrain is very similar to the Bruce Trail in Southern Ontario and now I know why – both are part of the great Niagara Escarpment. I spent 10 months hiking the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario and became forever smitten by this kind of landscape.
It is breathtakingly beautiful and worth the drive. We should meet there and spend a week together 🙂
