How Much and What Exactly For?

My favorite scene in the movie “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Judi Dench sits on the roof of a building in Mumbai, she talks to her business partner about her private life and concerns.

She is in love with an older gentleman, who lives in the same retirement hotel in India. The feeling is mutual, and he wants to take the relationship a step further, but she feels she needs more time to adjust to the new situation. She is in her late 70s, and so is he.

“I just need to tell him that I need a little bit more time,” she explains, I am sure he will understand.”

Her business partner, a wise young Indian man, glances at her and asks, “How much time do you have?”

She looks at him. No words are spoken. Sometimes there are no words necessary.

A sensible statement, it took my breath away. Guilty as charged, I am the same way. I, too, tend to kick the can down the curb. Yes, one day I will go and book the pottery class I always wanted to take. One day, in a future far, far away, I will have time to do all the things I have planned. I just need a little bit more time.

The truth is, we don’t know how much time we have on this planet, yet we often decide to make generous plans with the rest of the time we think we have. We ask for more time. We think we need more time.

If we feel we need more time, what exactly for? To love? To live? To ….?

Yes, we have to live in the now and not delay the things we truly want to do. Tomorrow is promised to no body. Live, don’t tell your wishes and dreams fade away. A wonderful answer to the prompt question!

    • Thank you, Leigha. Living in the now and then is not that easy, I struggle with it occasionally myself, but I try to.

  2. Several years ago my dentist warned me that a couple of adjoining teeth would eventually crumble, and asked if I would like him to take them out. My response, “it depends how long I’ve got” set him and his assistant into fun laughter. He removed one a couple of years ago. The other remains carrying out the task of two.

    • LOL I would have laughed as well. Time is so relative, isn’t it. Great story, Derrick.

  4. Whenever I say I need more time, I remember what my dad used to say to his students. “No problem,” he’d say, “I’ll just let you borrow this spare watch so you’ll have twice as much time.” They got the idea. Inertia is a cruel master.

    • I love your father’s idea. Two watches, double the time.
