The marble staircase and the columns were impressive.
She wondered about all the people who had walked up and down these stairs over the years.
It all belonged to her now, and it was her responsibility.
She closed her eyes; tears started to roll down her cheek.
How lucky she had been.
Finally, she had found a job.
She was a cleaning lady and a good one she would be.
Joy overwhelmed her, and she sat down.
Now she just had to learn the language and life would be good here in this new country, so far away from home.

I remember when I came here to the U.S. over 30 years ago. I was a newly wed who had just followed her husband 3000 miles around the globe to start a new life in the USA. I didn’t speak English and everything around me was so different from the small village in the Alps were I came from.
Some of the experiences I made then, I never forgot. 🙂

I wish there would be a law that we all would have to spend at least 6 months in a foreign country, not as tourists, but studying or working.
