The Piano Man in Manchester

A pianist who casually started playing on a piano outside Forsyth Music Shop on Deansgate, Manchester earlier this month. It’s not clear whether he’s busking for money, or just having a jam, but he wows passers-by with an incredible medley of tunes ranging from rave classic Insomnia by Faithless to Dr. Dre’s g-funk banger Still D.R.E.

As BBC Music News Live reported, the pianist was identified as Christopher Scamp from Liverpool, who told the Manchester Evening News: “I can play a few hundred songs and I can do them all the way through but tend to just mix parts of them together as not everyone has the patience for a full song.”

The footage was captured by Manchester local Richard Parker, who shared his video on Facebook, where’s it’s already clocked up more than 6m views.

Check it out, there are six other street performers and they are all amazing.

Thank you, BBC, for putting this on your homepage. There is more to this word than just bad news.

BBC, I appreciate the smile you gave me.

  2. There’s a free piano in the Grand Arcade in Cambridge (our nearest city) and passers by give great joy to other passers-by playing for a while. You get some great musicians, but Scamp’s performance is special. It’s a lovely tradition to dot pianos about a city for anyone to play, you sometimes find them outside too.

    • Our politics have it made hard for street artists. They almost disappeared and it saddens me. I recall times when I let a subway pass by, because the musicians was worth it.

My youngest daughter (recently graduated in Fine Arts from Liverpool John Moores) flew back from Geneva to home yesterday afternoon. I was sad. This makes me SO happy …. he’s a Scouse (so is my husband as a point of no interest whatsoever) playing in Manchester. And the other musicians featured on the link are wonderful. BBC – I am proud to be British for a moment (in fairness I normally feel more French than English) because this is the sort of feel—good we all need and your were prepared to share it.. Chapeau to you all and thank you Nonsmokinglady for sharing it. I am happy x

  5. It was purely because he loves to play. No money involved, although he has now been offered engagements to play in various venues. He does not read music BTW.
