A new co-host for the Today Show

What a history this show has. The list of distinguished hosts includes names like Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Bryant Gumbel,  Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira. Even Matt Lauer, who got fired for sexual misconduct in November, could be named as a good journalist in his early years. Yes, there was a time when good journalism was part of the show.

Today a new co-host was announced and what a bombastic press release it is. I tried to avoid it, but it seems every online site has to share the fantastic news with me, what forces me now to write about IT on my blog.

What can I say about the Today Show? I tried, but words failed me. Thankfully I found a comment, that sums it all up:

I wouldn’t watch this show if it was the only show on television.

If I was in solitary confinement, and this was the only channel.

If the human race was extinct, and only The Today Show and I were left, I wouldn’t watch.

The few moments I accidentally have watched over the past 20 years I could physically feel my brain cells dying, rapidly leaving my body.

This show kills brain cells, rapidly converting sentient beings into gazing, pliant, one-celled protozoa.

This show is a promoter of devolution of the human species. (Source: NY Times, Comment section)

I second this! (No surprise here)

Hoda, the new co-host will bring another set of sparkling, white teeth -and neverending smiles- to a show that should not be called news…EVER.

Knowing that the morning show is watched mostly by women (so they say) angers me. We are better than this ladies!

  • If you are interested in the local news, watch a free local TV station.
  • If you are one of the hardcore Trump supporters, that can’t be helped, by all means, get further brainwashed at FOX news.
  • If you care what is going on in this country, and, if you are capable to do your own research, please, watch CNN or MSNBC.
  • If you want some news and well-researched stories, please watch CBS in the morning.
  • If you are complicated like me, and you want to know what’s going on in the rest of the world as well, then you will have to watch BBC – because the rest of the world very seldom exists for our American news station. (Only the Royal family in the UK seems to get coverage 24/7, but this is a subject for another great post on a day when I will be overflowing with sarcasm.)

You forgot Jane Pauley! Or was that an intentional oversight?

Ha! I like/hate The Today Show too. But for some reason, I can’t stop watching it, even though I know I shouldn’t and gain nothing from it. And I actually hadn’t heard about Hoda being the host, but I’m a little disappointed. She belongs on the other hour with Kathy Lee. While I’m at it, I REALLY hate the hour they’ve given to Megyn Kelly; she’s literally like a bull in a China shop. Okay. I’m done. I say all of that to say, “I agree” lol

I only watch my local New Jersey news station, where the news is easy to hear, lots of feel good stories about what people are doing for one another, rescued animals etc. I check google news headlines but find the news hard to digest and really stay away from anything about 45 as it just upsets me and there is little I can do about the lunacy. I watched Today years and years ago when I was home in the mornings, I hated the interviews and the news from them, and now with the Matt Lauer debacle I am nauseated and can’t even think about it 🙂

    • I can take the news only for a short amount of time. I feel the same way you do. It’s like watching the wrong movie. I have it on in my workroom, but often switch to an audio book instead. I have not -and will not- listen to anything 45 has to say.

I’ve noticed that if I’m not up and watching the first 10 to 15 minutes of these shows then I’ve missed any ‘news’ there is.

  6. Hello! Morning TV is not what I remember when I watched regularly a billion years ago but then again what is? I watch a bit of Morning Joe now until he – or Mika – irritates me and then retreat to my book. Seems to be working for me.

    • You are back! I always wondered how you were. Good to see you.

I can only take small doses of Morning Joe myself. They do have the tendency to irritate me quite a bit.

  7. From what you say I’ve got off lightly never having seen the Today Show. However, I’m not even sure about the BBC nowadays. They are certainly not unbiased, and often seem to have a (not too well) hidden agenda. I’ve mostly given up on news, and am heartily sick whenever I do happen across a “Breaking News” story that I read about 3 days ago. It seems that every single presenter, with a few rare exceptions, wants to be a superstar nowadays, and the actual facts take a back seat. We are churning out journalists who think they are more important than the story. As another charlatan would say “Sad, So sad!”

    • In the end every post, every story, every book is written from somebody who is opinionated (biased.) The news years ago was read in 30 minutes and had to cover up everything. Today we have news channels with a 24/7 coverage, what I find annoying as much as you do.

I watch certain news shows, some for education, others for entertainment but often just use them to be quickly up-to-date. To find out the truth, is up to each one of us.

      • Sadly some people cannot determine the truth, and that is dangerous!

My father died nearly 15 years ago and was already loudly cursing the BBC saying ‘just deliver the facts and I’ll make up my own mind … your opinion is not required’ …. it has only got much worse. I do agree with Bernadette though that the world service tends to be much straighter and less ‘stars in their eyes’

I do watch the Today Show but it is sort of like reading People Mag. BBC world news is my ticket for the real stuff.

I stopped watching any sort of ‘news’ program in maybe 1992. The decline of these morning ‘news’ shows into yet another in a series of banal talk shows is discouraging, but to those of us who never looked in the first place, well it’s not surprising. I have a niece whose career path in life is to be one of those with the sparkling teeth, vacuous smile and not an active brain cell in her wee head. I feel sorry for her because she’s been sold a bill of goods by in theory gaining a ‘journalism’ degree. Those women there couldn’t spell journalism I suspect, and neither can my niece. Maybe she has a chance? Thanks for passing this along all the same. I like to be informed, even if I tend to try killing the messenger time to time.. (not you of course, but in general). 😉

    • I watch some of them. I love Lester Holdt in the evening, laugh when I listen to Morning Joe (since he parted from the Republican party) and really love BBC world news. The rest I rather read online, this way I can country jump 🙂

Love the NY Times comment. Sadly I must confess I used to watch the Today Show prior to the firing of Ann Curry then I stopped as Matt was on my hit list. Imagine my surprise at finding out he was a perve (shocker). When I saw that Hoda was crowned co-host, well, there really aren’t any words.

    • I used to watch it too, a long time ago. Back than you actually got news once in a while. Now I can’t stomach it and I turn it off, when someone turns it on.

I was so ticked off about Ann Curry I refused to watch anything on NBC and still don’t. I’m so thankful to Netflix because I don’t watch television at all. I’ll follow a series then binge watch on my tablet. It’s become a nice pastime.
