Of course, I needed a Fitbit. Everybody else is wearing one and I wanted to try it as well -and why not. The goal is to walk at least 10,000 steps a day, and how much easier would it be to achieve it, with a wristband that would count and log all my efforts.
I wasn’t sure what to get, so I decided to try a used one first and of to eBay, I went. I settled for a newer -older- model, made a last-minute bid and three days later my new fitness companion was in my mailbox.
The setup was easy. An hour later I was ready to STEP it up and wore the ugly, black plastic thing with pride on my wrist.
That evening I piddled around quite a bit, and soon the new apparatus showed the 800 steps I had taken, just taking care of the house and the dogs. There was no doubt on my mind, I would walk 10,000 steps a day with ease.

At 10 pm a quiet vibration on my wrist reminded me that I needed to got to bed and I was grateful. Again, I had fallen asleep in my chair and now I was on my way into bed.
The next day didn’t start so well. I overslept and had to hurry up. Nevertheless, between coffee, taking care of the dogs and setting up my workroom for a class, I managed to walk 400 steps. Good job Padawan! Only 9,600 to go.

My students arrived and I sat down and watched them work on their projects. Sitting down allows me to view everything eye-high and not from above, like when I would be standing.
It was the last class in a block and there was not much for me to do, other than talk, explain and gently nudge the students in the right direction, by pointing out the little mistakes they still made. I didn’t walk much, sat most of the time.
I am not sure how it really works, but it seems my mouth and my hands are attached to each other. The mouth opens – the hands go up and I underline my words in a sign language, only I can understand.

Many Italians and South Europeans talk exactly the way I do. To my surprise, I managed to TALK 7,000 steps in a 4-hour class. That must be some kind of record!
After class, I worked on a chair and sewed for about an hour. By the end of the day, my Fitbit showed I successfully WORKED and TALKED 11,200 steps -all while sitting on my butt.
High Five to me!

I continued to wear it for a few more days, but the number of steps it showed by the end of each day was ludicrous every time.
My Fitbit experiment ended and now the poor thing sits on my desk -ready to be sold on eBay -if I ever find the time to list it.
Let’s someone else have fun with it. My imagination is running wild!

What a funny story ( and the picture)!
Isn’t it fun! 🙂
I do love the way you described the gadget, and the picture summed it up. Now I know I am not purchasing it 🙂
Your experience is so funny! You’re active enough not to worry about how many steps, I’m sure. I do like my FitBit and I enjoy seeing the steps accumulate, but it’s mostly just a game for me. 🙂 I wish I could get some extra mileage for talking with my hands…I do that, too! 🙂
I like the way your chosen pictures fit your experience. If the last one does, no wonder you are falling short on the steps
The whole experience was very interesting.
🙂
You’re funny!! I now have this mental image you with your arms flailing while you talk 😆
Sigh, I know 🙂
Wow! I wish my Fitbit would could that many steps on me during the day. I believe the problem is it counts hand movements and vibrations as steps. For example, when you sew, your Fitbit hand is probably moving quite a bit. My Fitbit sometimes counts several hundred steps while I’m driving because I was driving so fast that my steering wheel was vibrating. I don’t blame you for giving up your experiment. I think Fitbit is both an effective and ineffective fitness tool, depending on the individual.
Love the bad taste picture! Talking 11,000 steps is a mighty fine achievement.
Why am I not surprised (about the picture.)
I’m a man. You have to excuse me!
Oh Dear, what is my excuse?
I don’t think you require one!
Haha
you are a riot!! This really made me laugh. I reset mine to 6000 steps as I found 10,000 to be unreachable on a regular day. The whole thing vibrates when I hit 6000 which gives me a feeling of accomplishment. (kidding) I put in 5 miles one day in school last year-just from walking all over the building, which was interesting to see.I bought mine with gift cards I had amassed at Target from those deals when you buy 3 get a $5 gift card. I had $99 worth saved. The Fitbit cost $1. 🙂
I spend under $20 with shipping and I am sure I can resell for the same amount.
My husband has a step tracker on his phone. He wears it on his belt and it seems to be pretty accurate (even though the number he shows me every night pisses me off.)
