Let me Try to Understand

Vote! (Voter suppression) by Scott Sedar | Artwork Archive

A competitor is better than me. I am not sure how it happened, but all of a sudden he attracts the customers and while I am still busy -he is busier.

I don’t like the situation, wish I could do better, but it seems I am at my limit.

What to do? What to do?

I want my customers back and since I can’t convince them with my quality, perhaps I could make it harder for them to reach my competition.

Maybe I built a fence around this shop, or tell them they can only visit him at certain hours.

Not every day, but only on some days -which I will pick later.

If they don’t want to come to me, then they shouldn’t be able to get to him. Logical?

Yes, in my eyes it is.

I want the ones with money in their pockets, wallets filled to the rim. The white and the privileged, they have always been drawn to me, I am their kind, so no problems there.

The other ones, the ones who don’t fit in, they are the trouble makers. The blacks, the Latinos, the queer, the misfits, the headscarf-wearers, the gender-confused. The old and the tired, the ones who have been punished by society, the Millennials the free-spirited -I have to find a way to make their life more miserable.

I will succeed, one way or another.

There are others overseas, who ship their ‘business’ right to him, bypassing me. That has to stop!

Shipping will no longer be accepted. If I can’t have it, he can’t either.

It’s all about my success.

Life is neither fair -nor square. Equality stops when I decide so, and democracy and all the stupid freedom that comes with it has to be undermined -if it helps me.

Me, me, me! Is this so hard to understand?

That’s what voter suppression feels like to me. It’s undermining democracy, it makes Lady Liberty angry!

It sure makes me angry.

How do Republicans live with themselves? Eyes and brain closed?

No if’s and but’s? No thought they might be next?

I get the principle, but I am still not getting it.

Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Doesn’t competition make you better, even if you don’t win?

Making sure that every American can easily vote, should be the goal.

Why isn’t it?

I tried. I don’t understand.

Voter suppression because THEY didn’t win! They should be ashamed. I know I am.

Wow! I am so impressed by how clearly you’ve set up the facts as they currently play out, and the brazen voter suppression actions that are taking root in our country, without apology or any sense of shame. It’s been very upsetting to read the new laws, and to read the racist undertones they seem to think are hidden. I think some of these new restrictions may backfire, or at least I hope that’s true. There’s likely to be even more voter mobilization than would have been so had they not been so openly dishonest.

    • Yes it does. I don’t understand why we let this happen.
