Men Cold vs Women Cold

We are both sick, nothing dramatic, it’s just a cold but this one is a tough one. It seems it’s going around and everybody has a hard time with it. It lingers and it’s hard to shake it off.

COVID tests were negative, flu tests as well (I didn’t even know there was such a thing).

So it’s a cold? Yep and a good one! Head cold they say and I suppose that’s correct because my brain somehow disappeared. It’s hidden behind a wall of stuffiness and puffiness. I can’t think straight, can’t hold a thought and my eyes are watering the way they do when I watch sad animal movies.

My ears are clogged, and I have now selective hearing as well. I have turned into a mucus factory, and the way it looks, I might break all the records -if there ever was one.

“We just bought tissues,” my better half informed me when he noticed I had put them on the grocery list, at the same time blowing his nose like an elephant, which he (and I) now seem to do every ten minutes.

“Yeah, so?” I replied and pointed at our trashcan and he nodded. Yes, we needed more tissues and we added Kleenex boxes to our grocery order.

We try not to spread the joy and germs too much. Groceries get delivered, we like it this way. Ever since the COVID lockdown, we let others shop for us, which has saved us a ton of money. No more store-manipulated impulse buys, nope we have a list and a stranger does our job. The tip at the end is well deserved, still so much cheaper and more efficient. We can work, while our grocery shopping is done for us.

But that’s not what I wanted to write about (I think) where was I? Oh, yes, the cold.

My husband, the wonderful unromantic Klotz I am happily married to. The man I love so dearly, who made it through heart surgery and shoulder surgery with ease, who didn’t even blink when he had testicular surgery and a cancer scare, came home sniffling right before my birthday.

I am a good wife, I am a kind person, I am fearless, I am a tough cookie, I am a trooper and I am mostly in a good mood, yet when he starts sniffling, I prepare myself for the worst and feel like running away -like hiding somewhere. Wife swap? Forget about it, I need a husband swap for about two weeks. Take him, keep him, bring him back when he is over the cold.

The reasonable part of me wants to say not all men are like this, but experience has proven me right. All men are like this and we the women, the wives, the mothers, the sisters, the girlfriends, the caretakers, we all put up with it.

Give it a try and say “My husband has a cold,” in a room full of females and you will get more compassion and empathy than you could have ever imagined. They all know. They all have lived through it -multiple times. They know what you are talking about.

It’s a popular theory that men get sicker, or at least act sicker, when they get a cold or the flu, while women, like warriors, go on with work, childcare, and life.

It’s almost comical.

So if I haven’t commented on your blog, it’s because I am busy making chicken noodle soup and ordering tissues and I am taking care of a man-baby.

Stay healthy!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. This is actually hilarious because whenever my dad is sick its the end of the world and he can’t do anything. Meanwhile, while my mom is sick, she’s still up and cooking for everyone, cleaning, and maybe takes like one nap a day while she’s sick. Same for previous boyfriends I have had, they will stay in bed all day and can not get up to do anything. This also has to do with period cramps. I have seen so many period cramp simulator tests with men and their girlfriend’s where the girlfriend’s normal cramps are at a level 8, and while being on the same level as their girlfriends, the boyfriend almost passes out due to the pain, while the girlfriends is literally sitting there laughing, completely unphased. It is so annoying how men are supposed to be physically “superior”, but when something as little as a cold or cramps hit them, they collapse and can’t endure it. End of my comment is that women are definitely stronger than men when it comes to pain tolerance hahahaha.

    • They are indeed the weaker gender, but we can’t tell them -yet.

Yes! Ever male I have had any kind of close contact with in my life that has gotten sick always seems to be dying. But yet you always hear how men a physically superior… not when it comes to the common cold or flu it seems. This was spot on! But I do hope by now you are both feeling better!

    • We are still dragging this damn cold along. This is a tough one this year. We are not the only ones who are trying to shake it off -which is good news, it means we are kind of normal.

You have hit the nail on its head. Sick men tend to be like dying ducks in a thunderstorm while women are expected to hold the family together and see to their needs no matter what!

I’m laughing in solidarity. SO TRUE! I am terribly sorry that you’re sick, however. I have been hearing about a virus that is going around mirroring COVID, and perhaps this is what you’re describing. Chicken soup for Thanksgiving, eh? I am imagining that you make a very good chicken soup. But here we go again; you’re sick and still cooking. LOL! That’s the way it seem to go. Feel better soon, my friend.

    • We had three COVID tests done and they were all negative. We too thought we got COVID again, because the symptoms are so similar, but we don’t feel that fatigue. Just a healthy dose of crankiness going around right now. I have agreed to stop the chemo pills and I am on antibiotics now. I have high hopes 🙂

Man-flu alert! I feel for you, Bridget. Especially when you are now unwell too. Everyone should have a spare room or lounge to sleep on, when their partner has the first sign of a sniffle.

Oh Bridget- sorry to hear you are both “under the weather” I had the same the beginning of October and it did take a while to get rid of it. Women are warriors for sure and men… big babies when they are not feeling well. That’s just a fact!

  10. Don’t forget about the hound dog face men have when they’re “battling” a cold. When they’re not napping, they walk around with a hound dog face–droopy and sad. I throughly enjoyed your post, Bridget. Have a happy Thanksgiving! 🙂

  11. I would comment comprehensively but I have the worst cold you could imagine and am laid low. I’ll get my wife to write later, after she’s finished cleaning the oven, sweeping the yard, and tidying the flower borders. Meanwhile, I hope you are taking good care of your husband!

  12. I laughed out loud at “take him, keep him, bring him back”! Thank you for that. And high five for being a mucus factory! My sixth day of being one, but my eyes are head are much better after endless cups of spiced tea. (I put green cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, bay leaf, tulsi leaf and crushed ginger in mine, and sugar for taste since I don’t have real honey at the moment).

Oh my! I hope the two of you are over the worst of it. I was thinking maybe you had RSV, but it does sound like a head cold. My husband is the WORST patient. I did have RSV in September, though, and he did do his best to take care of me while I coughed and slept in the bedroom for 2 days. He has (had?) cancer and is at the end of his immunotherapy treatments, so we’re working out what is next. He is overthinking it all and is sure he is going to die any day. Doctors have given him nothing but good news for 12 months, but he’s still worried. I guess I understand that. When, in the midst of treatments he felt bad, he felt REALLY bad, and whined for days and weeks and months. I had to let him do it though..cause….cancer…and I know that I don’t really know how that feels emotionally. I have asked friends who have had cancer and they confirm it’s so scary. So I’m trying to give him a pass when he’s being a sickie.

    • Wow, I am not sure if I should write what I think or perhaps just politely agree with you. I will be honest and I hope you won’t mind.
Actually, I think it’s time for him to snap out of his pity party. Yes, cancer is scary but the mindset can move mountains. Living every day in fear of tomorrow must be exhausting for you and him.
Your husband needs to fight and he should believe the good news. The ‘what if’ and the fear of tomorrow will ultimately take they quality of life away more than cancer ever could.

At our age we need to be grateful and enjoy every day to the fullest. I know what it means to feel bad and I know what pain means. I have an incurable disease. Good news, I know what I will die from, but there is even better news, there is a lot to enjoy (and fight for) until it happens. May it be tomorrow or in twenty years. In the end we never know.

Help him to overcome the fear! If you let him be scared you are enabling him. Tough love, as hard as it might sound.

Hope you are both feeling better soon. I have heard this analogy of man flu vs woman cold before. Can’t say it has affected me to that level and perhaps I have long since learned to stop whining. The best part is that I have not had a serious cold or flu for years, so perhaps my suffering resistance is due to be tested. I’ll do my best to man up. 😊 Cheers. Allan
