And Then They Were Gone

Our dog Vader, patiently waiting for his friend, our house squirrel, to come by. Every day, he lies in front of the sliding glass door and waits patiently.

He doesn’t bark at the squirrels, he just watches them when they’re eating from the dried corncob in the holder underneath our gazebo. We bought it just for the squirrels, after one of them had discovered how to open our bird food container. Which amused us endlessly.

Is it normal to feed squirrels, a small rodent, so many don’t like? I don’t know, and I don’t care. Our squirrels are part of the house. They live in the old oak tree in front of our home. In the evening, when we watch TV, I can see them chasing each other around the tree trunk. Sometimes, they pause, and it seems like they are looking inside our home — looking at us, the same way we are glancing at them.

Perhaps wishful thinking, but I know for sure the squirrel is aware of the dog’s gaze and mine. When I sit in my workroom on my stool and work on a piece of furniture, or when I cut fabric on the cutting table, I am close to the glass door as well. The squirrel then sits still and watches me. I often wave at it, not sure if a squirrel knows what to make of it, but I continue doing it. I am not a thread, I am one of the hands that feeds the birds and the squirrels, and I hope they know it.

Last winter, when we had so much snow, I placed a plate with squirrel food and nuts on top of the snow. It didn’t even take half an hour, and our visitors were back. They took turns with the blue jay,s and I had to buy more nuts. I didn’t mind, I understood. Being hungry and running out of food is no fun.

I often joked that the squirrels were our private exercise trainers for our dog Vader, and it seemed that it was a mutual agreement, enjoyed by both parties.

In spring, a squirrel was resting on top of our 6-foot-high wood fence, like it was waiting for Vader to show up, and when he did, the race was on. On top of the fence, the squirrel ran toward the back of our yard, chased by a barking Vader, who ran on the ground, but never with a bad demeanor. It seemed like a game they had, with rules that only animals can understand. The game continued daily.

Then one day, two months ago, hawks came into our neighborhood. They sat in the bushes, quietly, hidden, only to be seen by the trained eye. They waited patiently for the squirrels to show up, and then they snatched them, one by one, and transported them away. In flight, I could hear some of the squirrels cry out for help, and I was overcome by sadness.

The squirrels are not loved by everyone, because if there are too many, yes, they can empty a birdfeeder mercilessly, they might even chew through a cable on their search for food. They multiply, and before you know it, there are more of them.

But they are also very entertaining, and I think they belong in our neighborhoods; they belong in our trees.

Oh, how I wish hawks and squirrels would get along, but sadly, nature has decided that one is food for the other, and while I understand and don’t question nature, I hope the hawks soon will move out, and hopefully, a new family of squirrels will soon fill the old nest in our old oak tree.

If there were an election, I would vote for the squirrels to get their old neighborhood back. I miss them and find our backyard to be rather boring without them, and Vader agrees with me.

Now the corncob feeders are hanging in remembrance of better times and in the hope that soon, another family of squirrels will find the vacant nest in our oak tree.

I have always loved watching the squirrels in the neighborhood, unfortunately I have no trees in my yard but the backyard neighbors have a couple so I love to watch them jump from tree to tree. They are entertaining for the cats sleeping on the windowsills too.

Oh I’m soooo sad about the squirrels’ demise via hawks! Ugh…sweet pup…I know it’s the circle of life but when you’re feeding them outside and watching them and they’re so darn cute! Well, it just makes the heart sad….thanks for sharing the photos and story with us! 💖

  3. Giving the squirrels their own food is a good idea to stop them stealing the birds’

    • They love the dried corn cobs and it did keep them away from the feeders.

This is so sad! I hope new squirrels come to your yard soon. Nature can be so cruel.

    • But at least nature is fair and not brutal. Considering what we humans are doing to each other and too animals (slaughter houses and chicken farms) I think we are the real monsters.

Oh, I truly am sorry for Vader’s loss – I absolutely adore squirrels and they truly were part of my early childhood. Back in Tallinn, Daddy would religiously take me walking to the Castle Park with its avenues of oak trees and obviously acorns. Well, the latter were MY beloved toys but the ruddy squirrels always thought otherwise. Oh, the bleeding knees and hands as I turned warlike in our forever battles . . , but even then I thought them beautiful and feisty – so, I DO understand how Vader feels!

    • I love squirrels. As a teenager, when I was visiting London with other language exchange students in a summer program, I sat across from Buckingham palace and fed the squirrels. They were so tame, they even came and sat on your lap. The had gum ball machines full with nuts. I enjoyed it so much more than starring at a palace wall from outside a gate. 🙂

  7. We’ve entertained squirrels as welcome guests and also looked on in horror as they proliferated and decimated all our feeders. They eventually decided to move on to a nicer neighbourhood but, like Arnie, I’m sure they’ll be back!

Squirrels are very entertaining animals. Full of spunk and mischievous as all get out. Vader must be as sad as you about the loss. Hopefully by next spring a new family will be searching the yard for the corn cobs.

I’m sad that the hawk chose your squirrels. We have both too. So far I don’t think our Coopers Hawk has gotten anything as big as a squirrel, and we don’t have the bigger hawks spending time here, though they are not far away. I have sooo many squirrels, but they are all welcome along with my birds. In fact I just blogged about those backyard visitors before I read this. I am sure they know when we’ve just put out fresh food because they are all right here right away when they hear the food container opening. (it’s a metal trash can with a lid that sticks so it makes a lot of noise when I open or close it.) The birds know too. I think they wait for me every morning, and again in the evening if they’ve emptied everything during the day, which they often do. I have to bring the feeders in at night or the racoons drag them off and eat everything!

    • I miss them and I am not happy about it. We have very high pine and oak trees in the backyards and in the front yards. Perfect hiding places for the birds and for the squirrels.
I am going now and read your blog post 🙂

My dogs chase the squirrels in the park in our neighbourhood. They chase them up the trees and wish they could climb the trees too. It’s funny to watch. I hope you get more squirrels soon.

  11. I love squirrels! I talk to them when I see them on my morning walks. In fact, I carry dog treats and peanuts in my pockets for close encounters of the squirrel and dog kind! 🙂
