…
An old man going a lone highway
Came at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm vast and wide and steep,
With waters rolling cold and deep.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim,
The sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near,
“You are wasting your strength with building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day,
You never again will pass this way.
You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build you this bridge at eventide?
The builder lifted his old gray head.
“Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said,
“There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
The chasm that was nought to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be;
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him.

Hope you had a nice holiday weekend! This was a nice poem… he is a kind man.
We had a quiet weekend. 🙂
Love the message of this touching poem. 💕 Thanks so much for sharing and hope you’ve had a relaxing day.
An excellent poem. We work hard to make the way better or easier for those who follow us. It is the way of things. Happy labour day.
I am glad you liked the poem.
I believe many of labor for others, although we may not be aware at the time. You never completely know what your works have accomplished to make others’ lives a little better.
So true. I never thought about it that way.
A pity that more do not follow this fine lead.
I hear you!
Enjoy this special day to relax and celebrate what you, and other workers, have done and will do. But I can’t imagine a worker bee like you kicking back and not working. 🙂
Labouring for others who come after is true generosity
Happy Labour Day Bridget. Allan
Thank you, Allan.
Have a safe and Happy Labor Day
