King Charles the III, formerly known as Prince Charles, waited a long time to be king, perhaps too long? The royals in Great Britain, a business, a tourist attraction, a family as dysfunctional as many of ours, crowned their new king and queen.
To become old and wise at an older age, you first have to be young and silly first. I was young and very silly but not just that, there were times when I was arrogant and full of myself, phases when I thought I know it all. I looked down at people, not a conscious choice I made, it just happened. The arrogance of the youth.
The episode of “A Million little things” two weeks ago, shows a black gathering with family and friends. There is laughter, people pick at each other, the way we all do when we have a good time. A young teenage boy joins them, his face is earnest. When asked what is going on, he turns his phone around, and shows the rest of he people a video he just saw online.
I noticed the silence, turned around and looked at her on my screen. The young girl just stood there, didn’t say a word and at first, I didn’t understand.
Too often I see the elderly talking, instead of listening. They -just like me- think they know it all, and they are so eager to spread their wisdom. That’s a curse we carry on our shoulders, and it gets more cumbersome with each passing year. The urge to enlighten the youth gets stronger and stronger.
When we hit middle age, that’s when most of us start reminiscing. We think about the good old times and compare our present life to the past, and our treasured memories make us often believe life was mostly better back then.
“Anybody can look at a pretty girl and see a pretty girl. An artist can look at a pretty girl and see the old woman she will become. A better artist can look at an old woman and see the pretty girl that she used to be.
