1989 I sat in the lobby of a hotel in Frankfurt/Germany and watched the fall of the Berlin Wall on TV, surrounded by co-workers and clients. The beginning of a new era. We were optimistic and full of joy. At the time is seemed that the influence of the U.S. and western European countries was expanding, and nothing could stop it.

Today’s song is one that gave me, and many of my generation so much hope. Back then, for the first and last time, the Soviet Union had a human leader. The year was 1991 when the song “Wind of Change” became an international hit.

My Grandmother, the wonderful, wise woman who raised me, was a refugee. She left her home town right at the end of WWI in 1918, when she was 17 years old.

Both of her parents had been killed during the war and there was no place to call home anymore. She left town with her sister Emma, who was just 2 years older.
