In what kind of sickly world can you be overqualified for any job. Mother Theresa and even the Pope sat down and washed the feet of people we like to call undeserving -weren’t they overqualified? Some kings and leaders in history have purposely traded places with their servants. Yet, here we are, we live at a time were you cannot get a job because you are overqualified. Exactly since when do we punish people for their education?

The next time you see a homeless person on the streets remember me, please. As vulnerable as I come across writing about the time when we were houseless, they all feel the same way. Everybody has a story. Now, let’s continue mine.

I had never heard of ‘Sausage Kitchens.’ Turns out they are everywhere in Louisiana. You can even buy homemade sausages at some gas stations. Just like slices of pizza are sold on the streets in Italy, the people in Louisiana enjoy their Cajun sausages everywhere -and in many variations.

Dramatic and life-altering events take place in our lives, and people around us go on with their routines like nothing had happened. Neighbors came back from work, kids were playing outside while we were gasping for air, desperately trying to find a solution out of our dilemma.

In October 2009, during a time when the American economy took a nosedive, and people were being laid off by thousands and thousands every day, we lost everything. Our home, our jobs, our friends, and ultimately the city we had lived in for so many years.

I am a capitalist, but I strongly believe we have to support and lend a hand to those with fewer resources and opportunities. I believe in giving, caring and sharing. I also believe in personal responsibility, but how can I enjoy my success, when I know my brother is homeless, hungry and afraid.

Most of us are very fortunate. We can afford to go overboard, and we do it every year around Thanksgiving. We cook for an army of people, even though there will only be a handful at the dinner table. Instead of one side dish, we have four or five.
