I was born into an annexed region. I could have been Italian, but because of my Grandfather’s stubbornness, and because part of our farm was on the right side of the mountains/border, I came into this world as an Austrian girl. I am also American, by choice and love. The love for the man I met so many decades ago, who I followed to his country, who became my husband. Whose language I learned, whose passion I share. I am an American-Austrian, an Austria-American, a female version of Schwarzenegger. I am an Austrian in America.

Writing and Prompts

As many of you know, I started out in California. As a young adult, this mountain girl from Austria raised in a village in Tyrol with a strong population of 250 (give or take), managed to survive three years in Vienna, the Capital of Austria. The old beautiful, historical city, full of wine and castles, became my new home in 1981, and I was a proud student of the University of Vienna, founded in 1365.

Happy 4th of July to everybody here in the US. A day for celebration with family and friends. Perhaps a cookout, or a picnic? Our brisket is in the smoker, guarded by our dogs, who successfully stole a few slices the last time we made one. Dogs don’t forget.

People

I remember a time when we had political parties. They didn’t rule our everyday lives, neither was anything they did (or didn’t do) so interesting that we lost any sleep over it. We read the news and political discussion happened at the BBQ at the neighbor’s house, at work in the breakroom, or even after church.

For me, this is a verdict for all women.

A wealthy man in a powerful position vs a woman.

Women had to let it happen for way too long. This verdict is another big step forward. Sexual abuse is not happening because women ask for it, it’s still happening so often because so far most men have gotten away with it.

Such has been the patient sufferance…

We’re a mother’s bread, instant potatoes, milk at a checkout line. We’re her three children pleading for bubble gum and their father. We’re the three minutes she steals to page through a tabloid, needing to believe even stars’ lives are as joyful and bruised.

Our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury…

On a railroad car in your America,
I made the acquaintance of a man
who sang a life-song with these lyrics:
“Do whatever you can/ to avoid
becoming a roofing man.”

I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.
