My blog and your blog are part of the blogosphere, the totality of all blogs. With our blogs, we are THE counterweight to social media.
With our blog articles, we contribute to making the Internet a useful place. Our blog posts can be found by everyone because they are not locked away behind the digital walls of Facebook, LinkedIn & Co., and others. With every link we set, we empower other bloggers. With every blog post, we strengthen our own platform and not a social media platform, which has been designed in such a way that people are quickly outraged and scroll through the feed longer than it is good for them.
For idealists who want to become visible online, the following applies:
“Go build your own blog!”
Really, I love everything about blogging. The steep learning curve, the appreciative comments, and the fact that my thoughts form into sentences while writing. I take something out of my INNER JUNK DRAWER aka brain, and often don’t know what to do with it. Words come to my mind, ideas, and stories I want to share and before I know it, sentences form and I often find myself in the middle of a blog post that I didn’t see coming. Just answering a comment frequently leads to another blog post.
Blogging made me more creative, courageous, and self-confident, and I got to know many interesting people. I think by now, after ten years, it’s safe to list blogging under my hobbies.
I started as a Non-Smoking blog. The Happy Quitter was not meant to last, yet it’s still here. Why?
My first posts, when I wrote about my feelings and shared my emotions during the time when I quit smoking, are still read to this day. At my 10th blogging anniversary, a reader thanked me. My small, insignificant blog has made a big difference in someone’s life. By writing about myself and my experiences I had helped a person to quit smoking as well.
It can’t get better than that!
Whatever subject you might blog about, whether you post a manual or a checklist today, people will still find it in five years. We have no character limits on our blogs and can prepare texts in a very structured way. We can go into deep detail, or share pictures of our life.
We can also write about difficult and complicated topics.
If you want to help people with your knowledge in the long term and make as much difference as possible in the world, your texts are much better off on a blog than on social media. When people are looking for a solution, they don’t scroll through Instagram, no, they ask Google or the other search engines, and there you can be found.
Blogging makes you creative and improves your writing style
Do you think you can’t blog because you’re not good at writing? It’s the other way around. You don’t write well because you don’t blog! I’ve been blogging since May 2014 and I can guarantee you, through blogging you will learn to write really well. No one is born with good writing skills, it’s all a matter of practice and blogging gives you a lot of exercise.
By writing regularly, you sharpen your eye for punchlines. Over time, you will learn to write good headlines and introductions. You’ll also learn a lot about good readability. Storytelling becomes your passion. Everything we do regularly, we do really well at some point – including writing.
I could go on and on! I like blogging and knowing that we can make a difference -sooner or later- is perhaps the icing on the cake.
We all make a change!

I agree, from a newbie’s point of view you can write a blog AND NOT BE JUDGED OR TROLLED
Other bloggers are supportive and kind.
Blogs are so much more pleasing to read than Facebook and the blogs all seem to be much more informative and interesting.
The blogging community seems to me to be a lovely bunch of people with far reaching skills and interests, thank you for letting me join you.
Get rid of the trolls and interact with people who are interested in your blog. Facebook seems to be so different. I hope you find a home here.
Thank you for the encouraging message! I feel refreshed! 🙂
Thank you for your words of encouragement and just for the asurance. I am new in this blogging space and I am always doubtful because I am no writer but there’s something about sharing how you feel through writing that makes everything feel good. I am glad I came across your post, I appreciate you.
Don’t doubt yourself. Just enjoy writing and forget all about statistics and numbers. Enjoy it and have fun.
I will do that, thank you!
This is a great piece. 👍
I find blogging to be mutually beneficial. The writing helps me get things out, improves my writing and keeps my mind active while the reading unites me with others, broadens my horizons and keeps my mind active… it is a healthy activity. Congratulations on the ten years!
Thank you, Leigha. You are right, it’s a give and take.
You’re welcome.
All very true. I have been blogging since May 2012 and have enjoyed the friendships, the encouragement, the ideas, the suggestions that have helped me develop. A most interesting example has been my book reviews because they have given me the opportunity to go right back to my A Level English Literature school study. This is all influencing, clearly as a bell, how I now write about books.
Nice 👍
Interesting and appreciative points, Bridget. 😊
I’d blog more often if i was not as old as i am (with so many hobbies).
I find myself commenting, yet again, that I love this post Bridget! You’ve hit the nail firmly and squarely on the head. What a lovely bunch of people we are, with all sorts of lives, dreams, and abilities. Long may we all share this huge chunk of goodness in this crazy world of ours!
I am always happy to ‘see’ you on my blog and I appreciate all your comments the same way I did years ago. I will never take them for granted.
You are right, we are a great bunch of people here in the blogging world and I am glad I could write about it today.
Making a difference for that one person is a pretty big deal
Yes, you are right, it was (is) a big deal. The comment took was a big surprise.
I feel seen writing/blogging.
I love being here.
I love the community.
I hope one person reads and has an aha moment.
The topics you write on are amazing. I’ve never read something I didn’t like from you. Thanks for being in my circle. I bless you. Please don’t stop writing. 🤗
Happy summer. 💞
“I feel seen.” I like that.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I appreciate you.
I think we might learn more about writing by blogging than by taking a writing course. So many ideas here that lead me to try new things. I am always happy when someone likes/comments. But I really write for myself too. I have over 200 drafts started. Sometimes a Challenge appears that I can rearrange/edit a draft to fit. I’m not good at writing long essays etc. But you sure are!!!
I think you are right. My writing got better (and longer) or both. 🙂
Thank you for the nice compliment.
Well said Bridget. You are ahead of me with your 10th Blogaversary. Mine comes up in November. I started mine as a temporary way to fill everyone in on my retirement trip. My posts have been mostly about travel and photography, but before I knew it poetry crept in and a social conscience. Where did that come from? Keep on blogging. Happy Thursday. Allan
I will try to remember your blogging anniversary, but can’t promise it. The mind has a way of it’s own these days.
Great response to the Daily Prompt, Bridget. 🙂
Thanks, Nancy.
This is a great observation which perfectly describes blogging. I started this for the simple reason someone might find something they like 50 years from now. Nicely done.🙏
That’s a good reason to start. Thanks, Ernie.
Blogging is such a great use of technology. I have met so many wonderful folks, like you, and learned so much via blogging.
It’s interesting how it works isn’t it? We start blogging because we want to share something and in return we get so much, and learn so much.
Exactly! 💖💖
I love your observations, on which I totally agree 💞
Oh, I love it. Thank you, Luisa.
You’re more than welcome 🩵🙏🩵
