An old sewing machine, a daily reminder of a great man who had a special talent.

She had never met him; he died the year she was born, but he lived on in stories and memories people shared with her.

Anne Frank

I read Anne Frank’s  diary for the first time when I was 13. It was a reading project in school and it totally overwhelmed me. I had just found out that I was part Jewish as well, a fact that had not been mentioned before by Grandmother or my family.

Many kids in Europe have to study Latin and Greek in school, and I was tortured with it as well. I learned about the gods and read everything about Greek mythology, and before I knew it, I was in love.

EU2

I watched the news today in disbelieve. The votes had been counted when I was sleeping and the results were in. She walked into the classroom, put down her briefcase, and wrote her name on the chalkboard. I was watching her -tried to figure out how to pronounce her name correctly when she turned around and greeted us all.

My Grandmother told me the same story every Christmas evening and I always asked the same question, “Why didn’t they just stop fighting forever?”

“Because it wasn’t up to them, they were just normal soldiers and they had to do what their emperors wanted them to do.”

“But they made peace for Christmas,” she said and then she told me the story.

Listening to Donald Trump makes me feel like playing “Spot the difference.”

Donald Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States, until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.” I read it in disbelieve, “Is this guy for real?” I though to myself.
