In 2016, they even made it to the Olympic Games. Now her story has been made into a film.

Born in poverty, raised with hunger, we listened and learned.

God only helps the ones who help themselves they said, and it made sense to us.

We knew what we had to do, we packed our things and left.

There should be nothing here I don’t remember . . .

The Gulf Motel with mermaid lampposts
and ship’s wheel in the lobby should still be
rising out of the sand like a cake decoration.
My brother and I should still be pretending
we don’t know our parents, embarrassing us
as they roll the luggage cart past the front desk
loaded with our scruffy suitcases, two-dozen
loaves of Cuban bread, brown bags bulging
with enough mangos to last the entire week,

I went grocery shopping the other day and I noticed the ladies right after I entered the store. It was a small group of women and I watched them as they were pushing two carts, they were shopping together. They talked with each other in a language that I couldn’t understand. They were refugees from Africa. I don’t know where exactly from.

I liked to draw pictures when I was a child. I wasn’t any good at it, but that didn’t stop me from doing so. My drawings were always full of life and colors; they told beautiful stories of dogs, cats, cows and roosters. I drew pictures of our farm with green fields, beautiful trees and gigantic flowers. No matter what I drew, there was always a smiling sun in the corner.
