Born in poverty, raised with hunger, we listened and learned.

rising out of the sand like a cake decoration.
My brother and I should still be pretending
we don’t know our parents, embarrassing us
as they roll the luggage cart past the front desk
loaded with our scruffy suitcases, two-dozen
loaves of Cuban bread, brown bags bulging
with enough mangos to last the entire week,

I went grocery shopping the other day and I noticed the ladies right after I entered the store. It was a small group of women and I watched them as they were pushing two carts, they were shopping together. They talked with each other in a language that I couldn’t understand. They were refugees from Africa. I don’t know where exactly from.

I liked to draw pictures when I was a child. I wasn’t any good at it, but that didn’t stop me from doing so. My drawings were always full of life and colors; they told beautiful stories of dogs, cats, cows and roosters. I drew pictures of our farm with green fields, beautiful trees and gigantic flowers. No matter what I drew, there was always a smiling sun in the corner.
