Last night was the winter solstice, also known as Yule, Yul, or Midwinter, which marks one of the most magical moments of the year: the moment when the longest night is over, and the light slowly returns.

Last year, we received four Christmas cards, and two of them were commercial advertisements. I miss getting letters and cards in the mail. Nowadays, our mailbox is full of flyers and promotions, as well as chain letters, for millions of valued customers like us (who aren’t valued at all). It stinks!

I watched a young woman shoot one of her Galloway breeding bulls with a hunting rifle, and the atmosphere, the ritual itself, and the logic behind it, as well as the surrounding area, which looked a lot like South Tyrol, the part between Italy and Austria where I am from originally, made me smile.
