Maggie and her blog sobercourage  grabbed my attention right from the start, when I decided to blog about my quit-smoking journey. Her blog is about her own struggle with alcoholism and the way she turned her life around. She is sober since 2008 and her blog is such an inspiration for so many. She is paying it forward the same way I do and I just adore her. Her writing and her story made me understand addiction a little bit more. She is helping so many…I am proud to be one of her blogging friends and followers.

Most smokers have tried to quit smoking at least 2 or 3 times in their lifetime! Some of them succeeded and live now a healthier life as ex-smokers…some of them gave up and went back to smoking. Still they would like to quit one day…but don’t really know how.

As I said yesterday..cold turkey is the way to go and now I can back it up with actual numbers…tadahhhhhhhh !

It is a little bit sad, but I don’t think children today and future generations will still know what an apron is. The principle use of Grandma’s apron was to protect her dress underneath, because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But that’s not all…it was used for so many other things.

This fall will be the first one in my adult life that I will enjoy smoke-free.  That’s hard to believe, considering that I am  50 years young. Seems like I have never spend my favorite season without a cigarette in my hand and now this has changed.

nicotine-addiction

I am stunned by the number of e-cigarette users who are reading and following my blog and I wonder why?  I think e-cigarettes are “hip” and “cool” for the generations behind me; an old addiction with a modern look. Somebody send me an email, telling me “smoking e-cigarettes will be healthier for him, since it cuts out so many bad by-products…and then sooner or later he wants to quit anyway”.

When I Think of a Cigarette

When I think of a cigarette,
I think of the four thousand chemicals
that would rush into my mouth and
burn their way into my once healthy lungs.
I think about that nasty taste, that nasty
ring of polluted air I would create in the
space around my body. I think of the
looks of disgust given by those close by.
I think of those who politely stepped
away from me, and those who not so
politely stepped away.

BARNEY CAR GETTYSBURGH

I remember it like it was yesterday…I did it, I left the dealership with a brand-new car. A car that didn’t fall apart when I shut the door, no blankets were needed to cover up the ugly seats and I didn’t have to whisper “please”  before I turned the key in the ignition. I was so proud. I had just been a poor student a few years back and now I was the proud owner of monthly payments for my brand-new vehicle.

the thinker

“You smoked, you are an addict” that’s what I learned when I quit smoking and it made me flinch inside.

I just smoked and I stopped, so why am I an addict? It bothered me so much. How can I use words like addict and addiction, if I don’t really understand the meaning.
